The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Mosiah — Chapter 8

I have written in this book only a few of the many things King Limhi told his people. He also told them all about their brothers and sisters in the land of Zarahemla.

He told Ammon to stand up in front of the people and tell them everything that had happened in Zarahemla since the time Zeniff had left.

Ammon also taught Limhi’s people the last things King Benjamin had said, and explained those things so they would understand his words.

After Ammon did this, King Limhi made everyone go home.

Then King Limhi brought Zeniff’s record to Ammon to read.

After Ammon read Zeniff’s record, the king asked him if he could understand other languages, and Ammon said he could not.

Then King Limhi said to him: “My people’s troubles made me so sad that I sent forty-three of my people into the wilderness, hoping they would find Zarahemla and ask our brothers and sisters there to help free us.

“They were lost for many days. They did not find Zarahemla, but they did find a land with many rivers and lakes. There were people’s and animal’s bones all over it, and many old buildings. There seemed to have been as many people there as in all of Israel.

“My people brought back twenty-four gold plates with writing on them to show that what they said was true.

“They also brought back brass and copper body armor, which is still good,

“And rusty swords without handles. No one in our land can read the writing on the plates, which is why I asked you if you could read old languages.

“I ask you now: Do you know anyone who can read them? I want very much to know about these people — where they came from, and why they were destroyed.”

Ammon said to him: “O king, I can tell you that there is a man who can understand languages. God has given him a gift — a special tool called the Urim and Thummim. No one can use this tool unless God commands them to, or they will be destroyed. Whoever is commanded to use this tool is called a seer.

“The king of the people in Zarahemla is the man whom God has given power to do this great thing.”

King Limhi said: “A seer is greater than a prophet.”

Ammon told him: “A seer is also a prophet. To be a seer is the greatest gift one can have. A seer has been given great power from God. Only God has more power.

“Seers can know about the past and the future, and all secret things, and all things no one else knows yet.

“God has given people with faith power to work miracles to help other people.”

When Ammon had said this, King Limhi was very happy, and thanked God, and said: “I am sure these plates have many secrets, and I am sure God has made the Urim and Thummim so people will learn about these secrets.

“The Lord’s works are very great, and he is very patient with his people. People are so blind and stubborn! They do not want to be wise, and they do not want wisdom to rule over them.

“They are just like wild sheep that run away from the shepherd into the forest, and then are eaten up by wild animals.”
