Mosiah — Chapter 5
When King Benjamin was done talking to his people, he sent servants to them to find out if they believed what he had told them.
They answered all together: “Yes, we believe everything you have told us. We know what you told us is true, because God’s Spirit has changed our hearts so we don’t want to do evil any more. We always want to do good things.
“God has been so good to us and given us so much of his Spirit that we have seen great visions. We could prophesy of all things to come if it were needed.
“Our faith in the things our king has told us has given us this knowledge which gives us such great joy.
“We want to promise our God that we will do what he says, and that we will keep all his commandments for the rest of our lives, so we will not be punished as the angel said, and so we will not make God angry.”
This was what King Benjamin wanted to hear, so he said to them: “You have said what I wanted you to say. The promise you have made is a righteous promise.
“You will be called Christ’s sons and daughters, because today he has become the father of your spirits because of the promise you have made. Your hearts have been changed because of your faith in him, so now you are his sons and daughters.
“You are free by being his sons and daughters. There is no other way to be free. The only name by which you can be saved is Jesus Christ, so all of you who have promised to obey God for all your lives must be called by Christ’s name.
“Whoever does this will live with God, and they will know their name, which is Christ’s name.
“Whoever will not be called by Christ’s name will be called by another name, and will not live with God.
“Remember, this is the name I told you I would give you which can never be taken away unless you sin. Be careful not to sin so this name will not be taken out of your hearts.
“You must always remember to keep this name in your hearts, so you will be able to live with God, and so you will know the name by which he will call you.
“How can people know a king whom they have not served, and whose ways they do not know, nor ever wanted to know?
“Do people take their neighbor’s animals? No, they will not even let their neighbor’s animals eat with their own animals, but they make them go away. So if you do not belong to Christ, and are not called by his name, you will have to go away from God.
“So I want you to be strong and full of faith. I want you to always do good things, so you will belong to him and live with him in heaven, and have eternal life through the wisdom and power and mercy and fairness of God, who made everything in heaven and in earth, and who is over all. Amen.”
