Mosiah — Chapter 25
Then King Mosiah had all the people gather together.
There were not as many descendants of Nephi as there were of Zarahemla’s people, who were descendants of Mulek and those who had gone with him into the desert.
And there were not even half so many people of Nephi and Zarahemla as there were Lamanites.
So all the people of Nephi and Zarahemla were gathered together into two groups.
Then Mosiah (and others) read to his people the history of Zeniff’s people from the time they left Zarahemla until they came back again.
He also read to them about Alma and his people, and their troubles, from the time they left the land of Zarahemla until they came back again.
When Mosiah was done reading these records, his people were very surprised and amazed.
They did not know what to think. When they saw that these people had been saved from slavery, they were filled with great joy.
But when they thought of their brothers and sisters who had been killed by the Lamanites, they were very sorry and cried many tears.
Then again, when they thought about God’s goodness in saving Alma and his people from slavery to the Lamanites, they praised and thanked God.
And then again, when they thought about how sinful their Lamanite brothers and sisters were, they were sad and full of pain for their souls.
Then all those with them who were the children of Amulon and his brothers (who had the married Lamanites’ daughters) were unhappy about what their fathers had done. They did not want to be called by their fathers’ names anymore, so they were called Nephites and counted as Nephites.
All of Zarahemla’s people were counted as Nephites, because the right to rule the kingdom had been given only to Nephi’s descendants.
When Mosiah was done speaking and reading to the people, he wanted Alma to talk to the people, too.
So Alma talked to them while they were gathered together in big groups. He went from one group to another, teaching the people to repent and have faith in God.
He told Limhi’s people, and all the people who had been saved from slavery, to remember that it was God who had saved them.
Then after Alma finished teaching the people many things and finished talking to them, Limhi wanted to be baptized, and so did all his people.
So Alma went into the water and baptized them the same way he had baptized his brothers and sisters in the Waters of Mormon. Those who believed Alma’s words and were baptized became part of God’s church.
Then King Mosiah said that Alma could build up churches in all the land and gave him power to call priests and teachers for every church.
This was done because there were too many people for just one teacher to rule, and there were too many people to teach the gospel to all at once.
So they gathered together in different groups called churches. Each church had priests and teachers who taught the gospel as Alma taught it to them.
So even though there were many churches, there was really only one church — God’s church — because all that was taught in those churches was repentance and faith in God.
There were seven churches in the land of Zarahemla. Whoever wanted to take Christ’s name on themselves joined God’s church.
They were called God’s people. The Lord blessed them with his Spirit, and they prospered in the land.
