Mosiah — Chapter 24
The Lamanite king liked Amulon, so he let him and the other priests rule and teach his people in the lands of Shemlon, Shilom, and Amulon.
The Lamanites had taken over all those lands, and the Lamanite king had made kings over all those lands.
The Lamanite king’s name was Laman, after his father. He ruled over many people.
He made Amulon’s brothers teachers in all his people’s lands, and they taught all the Lamanite peoples the Nephites’ language.
These peoples were friendly with each other, but they did not know about God. Amulon’s brothers did not teach them anything about the Lord their God or about the Law of Moses, nor did they teach them what Abinadi had said;
But they did teach them to keep records and to write to each other.
So the Lamanites began to get rich and began trading with each other. They became a strong and worldly-wise and tricky people. They loved to do all kinds of wickedness and robbing, except among their own people.
Amulon ruled over Alma and his people and treated them badly. He made his children treat their children badly.
Amulon knew that Alma had been one of the king’s priests, and that he had believed Abinadi’s words and been chased out by the king, so he was angry with him. Even though he was under King Laman, he ruled over Alma’s people, and made them work, and put people over them to make them work.
They were treated so badly that they began to pray strongly to God.
Then Amulon commanded them to stop praying. He put guards over them to watch them, and whoever was seen praying to God was killed.
Alma and his people stopped praying to the Lord their God out loud, but they prayed to him in their hearts. The Lord knew the thoughts of their hearts.
The Lord came to them during their troubles and said: “Be happy, because I know about the promise you have made to me. I promise my people that I will save them from slavery.
“I will make your work easier for you while you are slaves. I will do this so you will be witnesses that I, the Lord God, help my people when they are in trouble.”
So Alma and his people’s work was made easier. Yes, the Lord made them strong so they could do their work easily, and they were happy and patient in doing what the Lord wanted.
Their faith and patience were so great that the Lord came again to them and said: “Be happy, because tomorrow I will save you from slavery.”
And he said to Alma: “You will lead this people, and I will go with you and save this people from slavery.”
So Alma and his people gathered their flocks and took some of their grain during the night. They did this all night long.
And in the morning the Lord made all the Lamanites and slave-drivers fall into a deep sleep.
Then Alma and his people went away into the wilderness. After traveling all day, they set up their tents in a valley they called the valley of Alma, because he led them in the wilderness.
Then they thanked God in the valley of Alma for having mercy on them, and for making their work easy to do, and for saving them from slavery. Yes, they had been in slavery, and only the Lord their God could save them from it.
Yes, all their men and women and children who were old enough to talk thanked and praised their God.
Then the Lord said to Alma: “Get your people out of this land fast, because the Lamanites are awake, and they are chasing you. I will stop the Lamanites in this valley so they will not come after you anymore.”
So they left the valley and traveled in the wilderness.
After they had traveled in the wilderness for twelve days, they came to the land of Zarahemla, and King Mosiah was very happy to have them come.
