Mosiah — Chapter 22

Ammon and King Limhi began to talk with the people about how they could be free from slavery. They even gathered everyone together to hear what the people had to say about it.

The only way they could think of to be free from slavery was to take their women and children, and their flocks and herds, and their tents, and go into the wilderness. There were so many Lamanites that they could not fight against them with the sword to be free.

Then Gideon stood before the king and said: “O king, you have listened to me before when we have been fighting against our brothers, the Lamanites.

“And now, O king, if what I have said has helped before, please listen to what I say now, and I will be your servant in helping save this people from slavery.”

The king let him speak, and Gideon said:

“The Lamanite guards get drunk at night at the back gate in the back wall. Tell all the people to gather their flocks and herds together so they can send them into the wilderness at night.

“I will go as you command me to pay the last tax of wine to the Lamanites, so they will get drunk. We will get away through the secret place on the left side of their camp while they are drunk and sleeping.

“This is how we can leave with our women and children, and our flocks and herds. We will go into the wilderness, traveling around the land of Shilom.”

The king listened to what Gideon said.

Then King Limhi had all his people gather their flocks together. Then he sent the tax of wine to the Lamanites, with more wine as a gift to them. The Lamanites drank lots of the wine.

That night King Limhi’s people went into the wilderness with their flocks and herds, going around the land of Shilom. Ammon and his brothers led them toward Zarahemla.

They had taken with them all their gold and silver, and all the rich things and supplies they could carry into the wilderness.

After many days of traveling in the wilderness, they came to the land of Zarahemla, and joined together with Mosiah’s people.

Mosiah was very glad to welcome them. They gave him their records, and the records Limhi’s people had found.

Now when the Lamanites found that Limhi’s people had left the land at night, they sent an army to chase after them in the wilderness.

But after they had chased them for two days, they could not find their tracks anymore, so Limhi’s people escaped from the Lamanites.
