The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Mosiah — Chapter 17

After Abinadi finished talking, King Noah commanded the priests to take him and have him killed.

But there was a young priest named Alma, a descendant of Nephi, who believed what Abinadi had said, because he knew that what Abinadi had said about their sins was true. So he begged the king not to be angry with Abinadi, but to let him go away in peace.

But that made the king even more angry, so he threw Alma out and sent servants after him to kill him.

But Alma ran away from them, and they did not find him. He hid himself for many days and wrote down everything Abinadi had said.

The king had his guards take Abinadi. They tied him up and threw him into prison.

Three days later, after talking with his priests, the king had Abinadi brought to him.

The king said to him: “Abinadi, we have found a reason to kill you.

“You said that God himself will come down and live with people. This is why you will be killed unless you take back all the bad things you have said about me and my people.”

But Abinadi said to him: “I will not take back the words I have said about this people because they are true. I let you catch me so you would know for sure that my words are true.

“Yes, I am willing to die, and I will not take back my words. They will be a witness against you. If you kill me, you will be killing an innocent person, which will be another witness against you at the end of the world.”

Then King Noah wanted to let him go, because he was afraid of what Abinadi said, and was afraid that God would punish him.

But the priests began to shout, “He has said bad things about the king,” so King Noah got angry again, and commanded that Abinadi be killed.

So they took him and tied him up, and burned him until he died.

When the flames began to burn him, he shouted to them:

“Your children will burn others to death for believing in God’s salvation, just as you are doing to me.

“You will be cursed with all kinds of diseases because of your sins.

“You will be beaten and hurt by everyone, and you will be chased the way a wild flock is chased by wild animals.

“At that time, you will be hunted and caught by your enemies, and you will die by fire like me.

“This is how God will punish those who destroy his people. O God, receive my soul.”

After Abinadi said these things, he fell, dying by fire. He was killed because he would not take back what God had commanded him to say, and he showed the truth of his words by dying for them.
