The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

The Book of Mosiah — Chapter 1

Now there were no more quarrels among all of King Benjamin’s people who lived in Zarahemla, so King Benjamin lived in peace for the rest of his life.

King Benjamin had three sons — Mosiah, Helorum, and Helaman. He made sure they learned the language of their ancestors, so they would be wise men, and able to understand what the Lord had told the prophets of old.

King Benjamin taught them about what was written on the brass plates, saying: “My sons, I want you to remember that if it were not for these brass plates with the commandments written on them, we would not know about God and his mysteries.

“Lehi would not have been able to remember to teach all of these important things to his children without the help of these brass plates. But since he could read Egyptian, he could teach his children the things which were written on them. His children could teach their children, and so on until now, as the Lord has commanded.

“I tell you, my sons, if God had not protected these things so we could read and understand about his mysteries, and always have his commandments here in front of us, even our good ancestors would not have believed in God. We would be just like the Lamanites, who do not know anything about the Lord, and who will not believe anything they are taught about the Lord because of their ancestors’ false teachings.

“O my sons, I want you to remember that what I have said is true, and that the things written on the brass plates are true. The history written on the plates of Nephi about our ancestors from the time they left Jerusalem up until now is also true. We know this because we have the history right before our eyes.

“Now, my sons, I want you to remember to study the commandments and records very much so you will understand them. I want you to keep God’s commandments, so you will prosper in this land just as the Lord promised our ancestors.”

King Benjamin taught his sons many more things which are not written in this book.

King Benjamin was very old when he finished teaching his sons. He knew he would die soon, so he planned to make one of his sons the new king.

He had Mosiah come to him, and said: “My son, I want you to tell all the people who live in Zarahemla and in the land of Mosiah to come here, because tomorrow I am going to tell them that you will be their new king.

“I am also going to give my people a name, so all the people the Lord God has led here from Jerusalem will know that my people have worked hard to keep the Lord’s commandments.

“They will be known by this name forever, unless they sin.

“Yes, I tell you, if these people of the Lord, who have been so blessed, and who have been taught the commandments, become a wicked and sinful people, they will become just like their brothers and sisters, the Lamanites, and the Lord will not protect them as he protected their ancestors.

“I tell you, if the Lord had not protected our ancestors, they would have been killed or made slaves by the Lamanites, who hated them.”

When King Benjamin finished telling his son these things, he made Mosiah the new king of the land.

He also gave him the brass plates, and the plates of Nephi, and Laban’s sword, and the Liahona, which the Lord had made to help our ancestors find their way in the desert, if they had faith and did what the Lord said.

But if they did not do what the Lord told them to, the Liahona would not work. They would get lost, and the Lord would get angry with them. They were punished with famine and many troubles to help them remember to do what was right.

Mosiah did what his father commanded and told all the people in the land of Zarahemla to go to the temple to listen to what his father wanted to say to them.
