Moroni — Chapter 9
Mormon’s second letter to his son, Moroni
My dear son, I am writing to you again so you will know I am still alive, but I have sad things to tell you.
We had a terrible battle with the Lamanites, and we did not win. Archeantus, Luram, and Emron were all killed, along with many of our best men.
My son, I am very afraid the Lamanites will destroy our people, because our people will not repent, and Satan is making them angry with each other all the time.
I am working with them all the time. When I speak God’s words to them plainly, they are afraid and get angry with me, but when I do not speak plainly, they do not listen to me. I am afraid the Spirit of the Lord is not working with them anymore.
They get so angry that it seems to me they are not afraid of death, and that they have lost their love for each other. All they want to do is get even and kill.
Dear son, let us work with them as hard as we can, even though they are so wicked, because if we stop trying, we will be guilty. We need to work with them while we are still alive, so we can defeat the enemy of all righteousness. Then we can rest with God in heaven.
Now I will tell you a little about how much our people have suffered. Amoron told me that the Lamanites took many men, women and children prisoner at the tower of Sherrizah.
They killed the men and are feeding the women and children the bodies of their husbands and fathers, and they give them only a little water to drink.
But as awful as this is, it is not as bad as what our people are doing in Moriantum. They took many Lamanite girls prisoners. After they raped them,
They tortured and killed them, and then ate their bodies like wild animals to show how “brave” they are.
O my dear son, how can a wild people like this —
(Who were such wonderful and righteous people only a few years ago) —
How can a wild people like this, who love to do such wicked things —
How can we think that God will not punish this people?
My heart cries: “Woe to this people! Judge them and punish them, O God, and destroy their wickedness!”
My son, many widows and daughters are still in Sherrizah. Whatever food the Lamanites did not take, Zenephi’s army took away, so many old women are dying of hunger.
My army is weak, and the Lamanite armies are between me and Sherrizah. Every Nephite who has tried to join King Aaron’s army has been tortured and killed.
O the wickedness of my people! They are without order or mercy. I am only a man, and I cannot make them obey me anymore.
They are strong in their wickedness, and they rape and torture everyone, both old and young. They love to do anything except what is good. Our women and children have suffered more than I can find words to tell you.
My son, I will not say anything more about how awful things are. You know how wicked these people are — they are past feeling anything good. They are even more wicked than the Lamanites.
I cannot ask God to bless them for fear he would punish me.
But, my son, I ask God to bless you, and I trust in Christ that you will be saved. I pray to God that he will save your life so you will see this people repent and turn back to God, or else see them all destroyed. If they do not repent and turn back to God, they will all be destroyed.
If they are destroyed, it will be because they are just like the Jaredites — full of blood and pride, and looking to get even with their enemies.
Even if they are destroyed, we know that many of our brothers and sisters have joined the Lamanites, and I know more will join them. So if your life is saved, please write a few things if I am killed before I see you again. (But I believe I will see you soon, because I have holy records to give you.)
My son, have faith in Christ and keep his commandments. I hope what I have written will not make you so sad that you will want to die. May Christ bless you, and may you think of his sacrifice, and his mercy, and his patience with our ancestors. May you keep your hope in his glory and eternal life all the time.
May the grace of God the Father, whose throne is high in the heavens, and the grace of Jesus Christ, who sits at God’s right hand, be with you forever. Amen.
