The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Moroni — Chapter 7

Now I, Moroni, am going to write down some of the things my father, Mormon, said about faith, hope, and charity. This is what he taught our people in the church they had built:

My dear brothers and sisters, it is through the grace of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ that I, Mormon, can speak to you today.

I speak to you who are members of the church, and who hope and believe in and obey Christ, so you can rest with him in heaven after you die.

Brothers and sisters, I feel you are Christ’s people because of the peaceful way you treat other people.

As God’s word says, “You will know what kind of people they are by what they do. If they do good things, then they are good people.”

God has also said that evil people cannot do good things. If evil people give a gift or pray to God and are not sincere, it will not do them any good.

It will not be counted as righteousness for them.

When evil people give gifts, they do not really want to give them, so it is just like not giving the gift at all, and God counts them as being evil.

If people do not pray sincerely and from their hearts, it will not do them any good, and God will not hear their prayers.

Just as evil people cannot do good things, nor give good gifts,

Even so you cannot get good water out of a bad well, or bad water out of a good well. People who serve the devil cannot obey Christ, and people who serve Christ cannot obey the devil.

All good things come from God. Evil things come from the devil, because the devil is an enemy to God and fights against God all the time. The devil is always trying to get people to sin and do wicked things.

Everything that helps people to do good, and to love God and serve him, comes from God.

So, brothers and sisters, be careful not to judge something evil as being from God, or something good and from God as being from the devil.

You have been taught how to judge good from evil, and it is as easy as night and day to know which is which.

The Spirit of Christ is given to all people so they can know good from evil. I will tell you the way to judge: everything which helps people to do good, and to believe in Christ, comes by the power and gift of Christ. This is how you can know it is from God.

But you can know for sure that anything which helps people do wicked things, and not believe in Christ, and not serve God, is from the devil, because this is how the devil works. He does not try to help people do good, nor do his angels, nor do any of his servants on earth.

Brothers and sisters, now that you know the way to judge, using the light of Christ, make sure you judge things the right way, because the way you judge will be the way that you will be judged.

So I ask you, brothers and sisters, to study hard and use the light of Christ, so you can know good from evil, and so you will do every good thing. If you do this, you will truly be Christ’s children.

Now, brothers and sisters, how can you do every good thing?

I will tell you how by talking about faith, as I said I would.

God knew everything that would happen, so he sent angels to help people and teach them about Christ’s coming. Christ brings every good thing with him.

God also told prophets that Christ would come.

And there were many other ways God showed people good things, and taught them about Christ. All good things come from Christ, and without Christ, people would not have good things.

So because of what the angels and the prophets said, people began to have faith in Christ, and had good things. This was how it was up to the time Christ came.

People were also saved by having faith in his name after Christ came. They became God’s sons and daughters by faith. Christ truly told our ancestors: “If you have faith, you will get whatever good thing you ask the Father for in my name.”

So, brothers and sisters, have miracles stopped just because Christ has done his work to save people, and is now sitting next to God in heaven?

He did everything he had to do to save all people who have faith in him and who keep his commandments, and who look for good things. He lives in heaven forever.

Have miracles stopped happening because he has done all this, brothers and sisters? I tell you, No, nor have angels stopped teaching and helping people.

Angels serve and obey Christ. Angels visit people who have strong faith and who keep all of God’s commandments.

An angel’s job is to tell people to repent, and to do whatever is needed to make God’s promises to people come true, and to prepare people for eternal life by telling prophets what to teach people about Christ.

This is how God helps some people to have faith in Christ so the Holy Ghost can be in their hearts. This is also how God keeps the promises he has made to people.

Christ has said: “If you have faith in me, you will have the power to do anything that I myself would do.”

He has also said: “Repent, everyone on earth, and come to me. Be baptized in my name and have faith in me, so you can be saved.”

Now, dear brothers and sisters, if what I have told you is true (and God will show you with power and glory at the end of the world that what I have said is true), are there no more miracles today?

Have angels stopped visiting people? Has the power of the Holy Ghost gone away? Will these things stop or go away as long as there is one person on the earth that can be saved?

I tell you, No, because faith is what makes miracles happen, and faith makes angels visit and teach people. So if these things have stopped, woe to all people! — because that means there is no more faith, and no one believes, and all is lost.

Christ says people cannot be saved unless they have faith in his name. So if these things have stopped, then there is no faith. How terrible this is for people, because it is as if Christ had not made his sacrifice for them.

But brothers and sisters, I believe you have faith in Christ because of what you do. If you do not have faith in him, then you should not be members of his church.

Now, dear brothers and sisters, I want to talk to you about hope. How can you have faith unless you have hope?

What should you hope for? You should hope that you will live again with God after you die because of Christ’s power and sacrifice, as he promised.

So if people have faith, they must have hope, too. There cannot be hope without faith.

People cannot have faith and hope unless they are humble and meek.

If they are not humble and meek, their faith and hope will not do them any good in God’s eyes. If people are humble and meek, and can say by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, this means they have charity. If they do not have charity, they are nothing.

Charity is patient, and kind, and does not envy. Charity is not proud. It does not think of itself, and it does not get angry quickly. It thinks no evil. Sin does not make it happy, but truth does. It believes and hopes all things, and it endures everything.

Dear brothers and sisters, if you do not have charity, you are nothing, because charity never fails. So hold on to charity, which is the greatest of all, because all other things will fail.

But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it will endure forever. Whoever has charity at the last day will be blessed.

So, dear brothers and sisters, pray to the Father with all your hearts that you will be filled with this love, which he gives to all true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ — so you will become God’s sons and daughters, and when he comes again, we will be like him because we will see him as he is. May we have this hope, and may we become as pure as he is. Amen.
