The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

The Book of Jarom, the son of Enos

I, Jarom, will write a few things, since my father Enos commanded me to keep a record of our genealogy.
Since there is very little room on these plates, and since the things which are written on these plates are to help the Lamanites, I will not write down my prophecies or revelations. What more could I write than what my fathers have already written? They have written about the plan of salvation, and that is what is important.
We have had to work very hard among our people because their hearts are hard, and their minds are blind, and they are very stubborn. But God has had mercy on them and has not destroyed them from off the land yet.
There are many of us who are not so stubborn, and who have had revelations from God. Everyone who is not stubborn, and has faith, can talk with the Holy Spirit, who visits people with faith.
Two hundred years went by, and there were many Nephites. They kept the Law of Moses and kept the Sabbath holy. They did not curse nor swear, and the laws were very strict.
Both the Nephites and the Lamanites were scattered all over the land. There were many more Lamanites than Nephites. The Lamanites loved to kill people, and they drank the blood of animals.
The Lamanites came to war against us many times. But our kings and leaders had strong faith in God, and taught the Nephites to keep God’s commandments, so we defeated the Lamanites and chased them out of our lands. We built forts and walls to protect our lands and cities.
We had many children and lived all over the land. We had lots of gold and silver and riches; and we made things out of good wood, iron, copper, brass, and steel. We built many fine buildings and machines, and tools to farm with, and tools to fight with–bows and arrows, swords, darts, spears, and all kinds of weapons.
Since we were ready for war, the Lamanites could not defeat us. But what the Lord had told our ancestors was true: “If you keep my commandments, you will do well in the promised land.”
The Lord’s prophets warned the people all the time that if they did not keep God’s commandments, but sinned instead, they would be completely destroyed.
The prophets and priests and teachers worked very hard, patiently warning the people to keep the commandments. They taught them the Law of Moses, and about why it was given. The Law of Moses was given to them so they would know the Messiah when he comes, and so they would believe in him just as though he had already come. This was what they taught the people.
This is how they kept the people from being destroyed–by helping them repent all the time.
Two hundred thirty-eight years went by, during which there were many wars and fights14 Because at this time we have not been able to teach them the truth. The Lamanites have promised in their hatred and anger to destroy us and our records, and everything our ancestors have taught us.
I, Jarom, am not going to write anything else, because there is not very much room left on these small plates. But brothers and sisters, you can go read the other plates of Nephi and read what our kings (or their servants) have written about our wars.
I am giving these plates to my son Omni to keep as our fathers have commanded us to do.
