Jacob — Chapter 3

Jacob continues to talk to his people.

Now I, Jacob, want to talk to you who are pure in heart. Trust in God, and pray to him with great faith, and he will help you feel better when you have troubles, and he will punish those who are trying to destroy you.

O you who are pure in heart, look up and listen to the pleasing word of God, and be happy in his love. If you keep his commandments, you can be happy forever.

But woe to you who are not pure in heart and are filthy before God! If you do not repent, the land will be cursed for your own good, and the Lamanites, who are cursed in a different way, will punish you until you are all destroyed.

The time is coming very fast that if you do not repent, the Lamanites will take away your land. God will lead the righteous away from you to a new place.

You hate your brothers and sisters, the Lamanites, because of their wicked ways and their dark skin. But they are more righteous than you are, because they have not forgotten what the Lord commanded our ancestors — that they should have only one wife, and no other women, and that they should not commit sexual sins.

They obey this commandment, and because they do, the Lord will not destroy them, but will have mercy on them. One day they will be a blessed people.

Their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands, and their husbands and wives love their children. They do not believe in the truth and they hate us because of the lies their ancestors told them. How much better do you think you are in God’s eyes than they are?

My brothers, I am afraid that if you do not repent of your sins, their skin will be whiter than yours when God judges you and them.

Now I give you a commandment from God not to hate them anymore because of their dark skin and wicked ways, but to remember that you are wicked, too. You must remember that their wicked ways came from their ancestors.

You must remember how sad you have made your own children because of your bad examples, and how your wicked ways may destroy your own children–and how you will be punished for their sins at the end of the world.

O my brothers, listen and make your souls hear what I say. Wake up from the sleep of death, and be free from the pain of hell, so you will not become angels to the devil, and be thrown into that place that feels like fire, called the second death. [Amen.]

Now I, Jacob, said many more things to the Nephites, and told them not to commit sexual sin nor to sin in any way. I told them how they would be punished if they did.

I can write only a little bit on these plates about what the people did. There began to be many people. Many of the things they did, and the history of their wars and fights and kings are written on the bigger plates.

These plates are called Jacob’s plates, and Nephi made them himself. I will stop writing here for a time.
