The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Helaman — Chapter 12

So we see how false and weak people’s hearts are. We can see that the Lord in his goodness blesses and helps those who trust in him.

Yes, we see that at the very same time he helps his people prosper and have more crops and flocks and herds and gold and silver and riches, and saves their lives and protects them from their enemies, and softens their enemies’ hearts so they will not make war on them — yes, doing everything for his people’s good and happiness — that is the very same time they harden their hearts, and forget the Lord their God, and walk all over the Holy One, because their lives are so easy and they are so rich.

So we see that if the Lord does not punish his people, and if he does not send fear and famine and disease, they will not remember him.

How foolish, and proud, and evil, and wicked people are! How quick they are to sin, and how slow they are to do good! How quick people are to listen to the devil, and to set their hearts on all the worthless things of the world!

How quick people are to become proud, how quick to boast and do all kinds of evil things! How slow they are to remember the Lord their God, and to listen to what he says. Yes, how slow they are to do what is wise and right!

They don’t want the Lord their God, who made them, to rule them. Even though he shows goodness and mercy to them, they don’t listen to what he says, and they don’t want him to be their teacher.

People are nothing! Yes, they are less than the dust of the earth.

The dust of the earth will at least move here and there, and divide in two, when our great and eternal God commands it to.

Yes, the hills and mountains shake when they hear his voice.

The power of his voice can break up mountains and turn them into valleys.

The power of his voice shakes the whole earth.

Yes, the power of his voice makes even the center of the earth shake.

If he says to the earth: “Move,” the earth moves.

Yes, if he tells the earth: “Go back” to make the day longer by many hours, it happens.

The earth goes back as he says, and it seems to people that the sun is standing still (and this is true, because it is the earth that moves, not the sun).

If he tells the sea: “Dry up,” it happens.

If he says to the mountain: “Lift yourself up and come over and bury that city,” it happens.

If someone hides riches in the ground, and the Lord says: “Let it be cursed because of that person’s wickedness,” it is cursed.

And if the Lord says: “It will be cursed so no one will ever find it,” no one ever finds it.

And if the Lord tells someone: “You will be cursed forever because of your sins,” it will happen.

And if the Lord says: “You will be cut off from me because of your wickedness,” then he will make it so.

Woe to those to whom he says this, because they cannot be saved. He will say this to those who do evil. This is why repentance is taught, so people can be saved.

Blessed are those who will repent and listen to the Lord their God, because they will be saved.

May God bless people to repent and do good works, so they will be given grace for grace, depending on what they do.

I wish all people would be saved. But we read that in the great and last day there will be some who will never live with God again.

They will be unhappy forever, so these words will come true: “Those who do good will have eternal life. Those who do evil will have eternal damnation.” And so it is. Amen.
