Ether — Chapter 6
Now I, Moroni, will write more about Jared and his brother.
After the Lord touched the stones that Jared’s brother had taken up the mountain, Jared’s brother came down from the mountain and put them into the barges, one stone at each end. The stones gave light to the barges.
The Lord made the stones shine in the dark so the men, women and children would not have to cross the sea in darkness.
When they had gathered all the food for themselves and for their animals, and seeds, and animals and birds, they all went into the barges and set out on the sea, praying for God to protect them.
The Lord God made the winds blow very hard on the waters in the direction of the promised land. The barges were blown by the wind on top of the water.
They were underwater many times because of the very big waves and storms the wind caused.
But when they were underwater, they stayed dry because their barges were so tight, just like a dish, and just like Noah’s ark. But when they were underwater too long, they prayed to the Lord, and he would bring them to the top of the water again.
The wind never stopped blowing them toward the promised land.
They sang praises to the Lord day and night, and Jared’s brother thanked and praised God all day and all night.
This was how they traveled. No monsters or whales could hurt them, and they had light the whole time, whether they were on top of the water or under the water.
They traveled on the water for three hundred forty-four days.
When they got to the promised land, they bowed down on the ground and cried because they were so happy. They thanked God because of his mercy and great kindness to them.
Then they began to plant crops all over the land.
Jared had four sons named Jacom, Gilgah, Mahah, and Orihah.
Jared’s brother also had sons and daughters.
Jared and his brother had about twenty-two friends who also had sons and daughters, even before they came to the promised land, so there began to be many people.
They were taught to be humble and to keep God’s commandments, and God gave them revelations.
They began to live and farm all over the land. There were many of them, and they became a strong people.didn’t do many great miracles?
Jared’s brother became old, and he saw he would die soon, so he said to his brother: “Let’s bring our people together to count them and ask them what they want us to do for them before we die.”
So they gathered the people together. Jared’s brother had twenty-two sons and daughters, and Jared had twelve children (four sons and eight daughters).
They counted their people, and then they asked their people what they wanted them to do before they died.
The people asked them to choose a king to rule over them.
This made Jared and his brother sad. Jared’s brother said to them: “What you want will make you slaves.”
But Jared said to him: “Let them have a king.” So Jared’s brother said to the people: “Choose one of our sons to be your king.”
The people chose Pagag, the oldest son of Jared’s brother, but he refused to be their king. The people wanted Jared’s brother to make his son be their king, but Jared’s brother refused, and said they should not make any man be king who did not want to be king.
All of Pagag’s brothers refused to be king.
Then all of Jared’s sons refused to be king, except for Orihah, so he was chosen to be king.
Orihah began to rule, and the people began to get very rich.
Jared died, and then Jared’s brother died.
Orihah was humble before God and kept the Lord’s commandments. He remembered what good things the Lord had done for his people, and he taught his people about what God had done for them.
