Ether — Chapter 15

When Coriantumr got better, he began to remember what Ether had said to him.

He saw that nearly two million of his men, women, and children had been killed by the sword, and he began to be very sorry in his heart.

He began to repent of the evil things he had done, and to remember what all the prophets had said. He could see that their prophecies were all coming true. This made him very sorry, and no one could cheer him up.

So he wrote a letter to Shiz telling him he would give up the kingdom so the people could be saved.

But Shiz wrote back and said he would save the people only if Coriantumr would give himself up and let Shiz kill him with his own sword.

The people would not repent of their wickedness, and Coriantumr’s people got even more angry at Shiz’s people (and Shiz’s people at Coriantumr’s people), so they fought another war.

When Coriantumr saw he was going to be defeated, he ran away from Shiz’s people.

He came to the waters of Ripliancum (which means “bigger than all waters”). When they came to these waters they set up their tents, and Shiz’s people set up their tents nearby so they could fight the next day.

They fought a terrible battle. Coriantumr was wounded again and fainted from losing so much blood.

Then Coriantumr’s armies beat Shiz’s armies, and made them run away towards the south; and they set up their tents in a place called Ogath.

Coriantumr’s army set up their tents by the hill Ramah — the same hill where my father Mormon hid the holy records of the Lord.

Then they gathered together all the people from all over the land who had not been killed, except for Ether.

Ether saw everything the people did. He saw that the people for Coriantumr joined his army, and that the people for Shiz joined his army.

It took them four years to gather together all the people so they could be as strong as possible.

When all the people were gathered to the army they wanted to join, all the men, women, and children were given shields and armor and weapons. Then they fought all that day, but no one won.

When night came, they were very tired and went back to their tents. After they went back to their tents, they began to weep and howl loudly because of all the people who had been killed.

The next day they fought a great and terrible battle, but no one won. That night they wept and howled again because of all the people who had been killed.

Coriantumr wrote another letter to Shiz, asking him to stop fighting and to take the kingdom, so the people’s lives would be saved.

But the Spirit of the Lord was not with any of the people, and Satan had all power over them. Their hearts were hard and their minds were blind. Even though they were about to be destroyed, they went to battle again.

They fought all that day, and when night came, they slept on their swords.

The next day they fought until night came.

When the night came they were drunk with anger the same way people are drunk with wine; and they slept on their swords again.

The next day they fought again. By the time night came, all but fifty-two of Coriantumr’s people, and all but sixty-nine of Shiz’s people had been killed by the sword.

They slept on their swords that night. All the next day they fought with all their might using their swords and shields.

When night came there were thirty-two of Shiz’s people and twenty-seven of Coriantumr’s people left.

Then they ate and slept and got ready to die the next day. The ones who were left were all big and strong men.

They fought for three hours, then fainted from losing so much blood.

When Coriantumr’s men were able to walk again, they were about to run away to save their lives. But then Shiz and his men got up. Shiz promised in his anger that he would either kill Coriantumr or die himself.

So Shiz chased them, and the next day he caught up with them, and they fought again. Soon everyone had been killed except Coriantumr and Shiz, and Shiz had fainted from losing so much blood.

Then when Coriantumr had rested a little by leaning on his sword, he cut off Shiz’s head.

Shiz got up on his hands and tried to breathe, even after his head was cut off. Then he died.

Then Coriantumr fell down as if dead.

Then the Lord said to Ether: “Go out.” Ether went out and saw that everything the Lord had said had come true. Then he finished his record and hid the plates where Limhi’s people found them. (And I have written only a very little bit of what he wrote.)

These are Ether’s last words: “It does not matter if my body is changed from mortal to immortal, or if I must live until death comes, so long as I am saved in God’s kingdom. Amen.”
