Ether — Chapter 14

Then a great curse began in all the land. If a man put down a tool or a sword on his shelf, or where he always kept it, he would not be able to find it there the next day.

So people held on to everything they owned. They would not borrow and they would not lend. Every man kept his sword in his hand to protect what he owned and to protect himself and his wives and his children.

Two years after Shared’s death, Shared’s brother came and made war against Coriantumr, but Coriantumr beat him and chased him into the wilderness of Akish.

Then Shared’s brother fought Coriantumr in the wilderness of Akish. It was a terrible war, and many thousands died.

Then Coriantumr laid siege to the wilderness, but Shared’s brother came at night and killed part of Coriantumr’s army, since they were drunk.

Then Shared’s brother came into the land of Moron and sat on Coriantumr’s throne.

Coriantumr lived in the wilderness with his army for two years, and many people joined his army.

Many people also joined the army of Shared’s brother (named Gilead), because of secret combinations.

Then Gilead’s high priest killed him as he sat on his throne.

Then another man in the secret combination killed the high priest in a secret place and took over the kingdom. That man’s name was Lib, and he was taller than any other man in all the land.

Coriantumr came to the land of Moron and made war against Lib during Lib’s first year.

Coriantumr fought with Lib, and Lib wounded him on the arm. But Coriantumr’s army began to win, and they chased Lib to the seashore.

Coriantumr chased Lib, and Lib fought with him at the seashore.

Lib beat Coriantumr’s armies, so they ran away to the wilderness of Akish again.

Lib chased them until they got to the plains of Agosh. Coriantumr had taken all the people with him when he ran away to that part of the land.

So when he came to the plains of Agosh, he made war against Lib and killed him. But Lib’s brother fought against Coriantumr in Lib’s place, and the war became so bad that Coriantumr and his army ran away.

The name of Lib’s brother was Shiz. Shiz chased Coriantumr, and took over many cities, killing women and children, and burning the cities.

People all over the land were very afraid of Shiz, and said: “Who can stand against Shiz and his army? He is destroying everything in his path!”

Then the people began to join together in armies all over the land.

Some of them joined Shiz’s army, and some of them joined Coriantumr’s army.

The war had lasted such a long time, and so many people had been killed, that all the land was covered with dead bodies.

The battles happened so fast that no one stayed to bury the dead. They would fight bloody fights, then move to another place and fight more, leaving the bodies of men, women, and children to rot all over the land.

There was a terrible stink all over the land, and it bothered everyone very much day and night.

Even so, Shiz would not stop chasing Coriantumr, because he had promised to get even with Coriantumr for killing his brother Lib. But God had told Ether that Coriantumr would not die by the sword.

So we see that God’s anger was against them. Their own wickedness had made a way for them to completely destroy themselves.

Then Shiz chased Coriantumr east to the seashore, and Coriantumr fought Shiz there for three days.

So many people in Shiz’s armies were killed that the rest of them began to run away from Coriantumr’s armies. They ran to the land of Corihor, killing all the people on the way who would not join them.

They set up their tents in the valley of Corihor, and Coriantumr set up his tents in the valley of Shurr. The valley of Shurr was near the hill Comnor. Coriantumr gathered his armies on the hill Comnor and then used a trumpet to call Shiz to come and fight them.

Shiz and his armies came and fought, but were beaten. They came a second time and were beaten again. They came a third time, and the battle got even worse.

Shiz hurt Coriantumr many times, and Coriantumr fainted from losing so much blood. He was carried away as if dead.

But so many men, women, and children had been killed on both sides that Shiz told his people not to chase Coriantumr’s armies. So they went back to their tents.
