The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

The Book of Ether — Chapter 1

Now I, Moroni, will write a short history of the people whom the Lord destroyed, who lived in the north part of this land long before the Nephites came.

This history is based on the things written on the twenty-four gold plates Limhi’s people found, called the Book of Ether.

The first part of those plates talk about how the world was made, and about Adam and Eve, and about the things that happened up to the time the Tower of Babel was built. But since the Jews have written about that in the Bible,

I am not going to write about those things. But the person to whom God gives those plates will also be able to read all of the plates, including that first part.

I am going to write about the things that happened to that people from the time of the Tower of Babel down to the time they were destroyed.

This is their record. Ether was the person who wrote on the twenty-four plates, and he was a descendant of Coriantor.

Coriantor was Moron’s son.

Moron was Ethem’s son.

Ethem was Ahah’s son.

Ahah was Seth’s son.

Seth was Shiblon’s son.

Shiblon was Com’s son.

Com was Coriantum’s son.

Coriantum was Amnigaddah’s son.

Amnigaddah was Aaron’s son.

Aaron was a descendant of Heth, and Heth was Hearthom’s son.

Hearthom was Lib’s son.

Lib was Kish’s son.

Kish was Corom’s son.

Corom was Levi’s son.

Levi was Kim’s son.

Kim was Morianton’s son,

And Morianton was a descendant of Riplakish.

Riplakish was Shez’s son.

Shez was Heth’s son.

Heth was Com’s son.

Com was Coriantum’s son.

Coriantum was Emer’s son.

Emer was Omer’s son.

Omer was Shule’s son.

Shule was Kib’s son.

Kib was Oriah’s son, and Oriah was Jared’s son.

Jared was the one who left the Tower of Babel with his brother and their families, and with some other families. This happened when the Lord, in his anger, scattered all of the people all over the earth, and made them all speak in different languages.

Jared’s brother was a big, strong man, and the Lord blessed him very much. So Jared said to his brother: “Pray to the Lord that he will let us all speak the same language.”

So Jared’s brother prayed to the Lord, and the Lord was kind to Jared and his brother, so he did not change their language.

Then Jared said to his brother: “Pray to the Lord again so he will not change our friends’ language.”

So Jared’s brother prayed to the Lord again, and the Lord was kind to their friends and their families, and did not change their language.

Then Jared said to his brother: “Ask the Lord where we should go if he wants us to leave this land. Who knows, maybe he will take us to the best and most beautiful land on earth. If that happens, we should always do what the Lord says, so we can always have that land.”

So Jared’s brother prayed to the Lord and asked him what Jared told him to ask.

The Lord listened to Jared’s brother, and had mercy on him, and said:

“Gather all your different kinds of flocks, and make sure there are males and females of each kind. Gather every kind of seed. Then gather your family, and Jared and his family, and your friends and their families.

“After you do this, lead them to the north valley, where I will meet you. I will go in front of you and take you to the best and most beautiful land on earth.

“I will bless you and your descendants, and your brother and his descendants, and they will be a great people there. There will not be any other people as great as your people on all the earth. I will do this because you have prayed to me for such a long time.”
