Alma — Chapter 62
After Moroni read this letter, his heart took courage and he was filled with joy, because then he knew that Pahoran still loved freedom and his country.
But he was also very sad because of the wickedness of the people who had overthrown Pahoran and rebelled against their country and against God.
So Moroni took a few men, as Pahoran had said, and went with them to the land of Gideon, leaving Lehi and Teancum over the rest of his army.
He put up the flag of freedom everywhere he went, and gathered as many people as he could on his way to the land of Gideon.
Thousands joined him, taking their swords to fight for their freedom so they would not become slaves.
So when Moroni got to the land of Gideon, he had gathered as many men as he could on his way. When they joined with Pahoran’s men, they were stronger than Pachus and his men. (Pachus was the king who had thrown the freemen out of Zarahemla.)
Then Moroni and Pahoran went with their armies to Zarahemla to fight with Pachus and his men.
Pachus was killed and his men became prisoners, and Pahoran became chief judge again.
Pachus’s men and the kingmen who had been taken to prison were judged and killed by law. Yes, all who would not protect their country, but fought against it, were killed.
The Nephites had to keep this law strictly for the safety of the country. Those who were against freedom were quickly killed by law.
This was how the thirtieth year of the Nephite judges ended, with Moroni and Pahoran bringing peace back to the land of Zarahemla and their people, after killing those who fought against freedom.
Then in the beginning of the thirty-first year of the judges, Moroni sent supplies and an army of six thousand men to help Helaman protect that part of the land.
He also sent an army of six thousand men, along with enough food, to Lehi and Teancum’s armies. They did this to make the land strong against the Lamanites.
Then Moroni and Pahoran, after leaving a large number of men in the land of Zarahemla, took a large number of men to the land of Nephihah to get it back from the Lamanites.
As they were going towards that land, they came upon a large Lamanite army, and killed many of them, and took their supplies and weapons.
After they had defeated them, they made them promise not to fight against the Nephites anymore.ut the things I have seen and heard.
When they promised this, the Nephites sent them to live with the people of Ammon. There were about four thousand of them who had not been killed.
After they sent them away, they went towards the land of Nephihah again. When they got there, they set up their tents in the fields near the city of Nephihah.
Moroni wanted the Lamanites to come out of the city to fight them. But the Lamanites knew the Nephites were very brave, and that there were lots of them, so they did not dare come out of the city to fight them that day.
When the night came, Moroni went on top of the city wall to see what part of the city the Lamanites kept their armies in.
They were on the east, near the gate, and they were all asleep. Then Moroni went back to his army and had them make strong ropes and ladders so they could climb up the walls and be let down the other side.
Moroni had his men climb up the walls and let themselves down inside the west part of the city, where the Lamanite armies did not camp.
They did this all night long, climbing up the ladders and going down the ropes. When the morning came, they were all inside the city walls.
When the Lamanites woke up and saw Moroni’s armies inside the city walls, they were very afraid and ran out of the city at the gate.
When Moroni saw they were running away, he sent his men against them. They killed many of them and took many of them prisoner. The rest ran away into the land of Moroni, by the borders near the sea.
So Moroni and Pahoran got back the city of Nephihah without one Nephite being killed, but many Lamanites were killed.
Many Lamanite prisoners wanted to join the people of Ammon and be free.
All who wanted to do this were given their freedom.
So all the Lamanite prisoners joined the people of Ammon, and began to work hard, farming and raising all kinds of flocks and herds. This helped the Nephites, because they did not have to worry about taking care of any Lamanite prisoners.
After Moroni took back the city of Nephihah, he went from the land of Nephihah to the land of Lehi. He had taken many Lamanites prisoner, making the Lamanite armies much weaker; and he had gotten back many Nephite prisoners, making his army stronger.
So when the Lamanites saw Moroni coming, they were afraid again and ran away from his army.
Moroni and his army chased them from city to city until they were met by Lehi and Teancum. Then the Lamanites ran from them down to the borders by the sea, until they came to the land of Moroni.
All the Lamanite armies were gathered together in the land of Moroni with their king, Ammoron.
The armies of Moroni and Lehi and Teancum camped all around the borders of the wilderness, so the Lamanites were surrounded on the east and south.
They camped for the night, because both the Lamanites and Nephites were very tired from their long march. No one made any plans that night except Teancum. When he thought about the awful war between the Nephites and Lamanites that Ammoron and his brother Amalickiah had begun, which had caused so much killing and famine, he got very angry.
So Teancum, in his anger, went into the Lamanites’ camp by letting himself down over the city walls. He went with a rope from place to place until he found the king. Then he threw a spear at him which hit him near his heart. But the king woke up his servant before he died, so the Lamanites chased Teancum and killed him.
When Lehi and Moroni learned that Teancum was dead, they were very sad, because he had fought bravely for his country, and was a true friend of freedom. He had suffered many terrible troubles.
The next day Moroni went against the Lamanites and killed many of them, and beat them back out of the land. They ran away and did not come back against the Nephites at that time.
This was how the thirty-first year ended. They had had wars and famine and trouble for many years.
The Nephites had had murders and fights and rebellions and all kinds of wickedness, but they were saved because of the prayers of the righteous.
The war between the Nephites and Lamanites had gone on so long that some had become hardened, while others had become humble before God.
After Moroni made the parts of the land closest to the Lamanites strong enough, he went back to the city of Zarahemla. Helaman went home, too, and the Nephites had peace again.
Moroni made his son Moronihah chief over his armies, then went home to spend the rest of his life in peace.
Pahoran went back to the judgment-seat, and Helaman preached the gospel to the people, because the church needed attention after all the many wars and quarrels.
So Helaman and his brothers taught the gospel with power, and helped many people see their wickedness and repent of it and be baptized to the Lord their God.
They built up God’s church again in all the land.
New laws were made, and the people chose their judges and chief judges.
The Nephites began to prosper in the land again. They began to have many children and began to get strong again. And they began to get very rich.
But even though they were rich and strong, they did not become proud. They did not forget the Lord their God, but were humble before him.
Yes, they remembered the great things the Lord had done for them by saving them from death, and slavery, and prisons, and from all kinds of trouble, and by saving them from their enemies.
They prayed to the Lord their God all the time. The Lord blessed them as he had promised, and they became strong and prospered in the land.
All this happened (and Helaman died, too) during the thirty-fifth year of the Nephite judges.
