The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Alma — Chapter 59

After Moroni received Helaman’s letter during the thirtieth year of the judges, he was very happy about how Helaman had gotten back the lands which had been lost.

He told all the people in the lands nearby so they would be happy, too.

Then he sent a letter to Pahoran right away asking him to send more men to help Helaman’s armies, so they could protect the lands they had gotten back with God’s help.

After Moroni sent the letter, he began to plan again how he could get back the rest of the lands and cities the Lamanites had taken from the Nephites.

But while Moroni was getting ready to fight the Lamanites, the Lamanites made war against the city of Nephihah (where the people from the cities of Moroni, Lehi, and Morianton had gathered).

All the Lamanites who had left the land in and near Manti had joined with the Lamanites there.

Since there were many Lamanites, and since they were getting stronger every day, their leader Ammoron told them to fight against the people of Nephihah, and they began to kill many of them.

The Lamanite armies were so big that the rest of the people of Nephihah ran away from them and joined Moroni’s army.

Moroni had thought the judges would send men to Nephihah to help the people protect the city, since he knew it was easier to protect the city from the Lamanites than to have to fight to get it back. So he had thought the people there would be able to easily protect the city.

This is why he had kept back all his armies to protect the cities he had won back.

Now when Moroni saw that the city of Nephihah was lost, he was very sad and began to wonder if the people were going to lose to the Lamanites because of wickedness.

All of Moroni’s chief captains wondered about the people’s wickedness, too, because the Lamanites had beaten them.

Moroni was very angry with the judges, because it seemed they did not care about their country’s freedom.
