Alma — Chapter 41

Alma keeps talking to Corianton.

My son, I want to tell you more about the restoration I talked about, because some people have changed what the scriptures mean, and have been very wrong about this thing. I see that you have also been worried about it, so I will explain it to you.

I tell you, my son, that the plan of restoration goes along with God’s justice, because all things need to be put back where they belong. It is just and fair that people’s spirits will be restored to their bodies, and that every part of the body will be restored to itself, by the power and resurrection of Christ.

God’s justice says people must be judged by their works. If their works were good in this life, and if the things their hearts wanted were good, they will be restored to good things at the last day.

If their works were evil, they will be restored to evil things. So all things will be put back where they belong — mortal becomes immortal, imperfect becomes perfect — all restored to endless happiness in God’s kingdom, or to endless misery in the devil’s kingdom.

Some people will be raised to happiness and goodness, because they want to be happy and good. Some people will be raised to evil because they want to be evil. Just as they wanted to do evil all their lives, evil will be their reward when they die.

It is the same on the other hand. If people repented of their sins, and wanted to be righteous all their lives, they will have righteousness as their reward.

Those are the ones the Lord has saved. Yes, those are the ones saved from the eternal night of darkness. This is how people will stand or fall. They judge for themselves whether they will do good or evil.

God’s laws cannot change. The way is ready, and anyone who obeys will be saved.

Now, my son, do not dare to commit one more sin against your God by doing those [evil] things you have done before.

You should not think that “restoration” means you will be restored from sin to happiness. I tell you that wickedness never was happiness.

My son, all people are worldly, and all have sinned. They do not walk with God, and they do things God would never do, so they cannot be happy.

Does “restore” mean to take something from its natural place and put it in an unnatural place, going against its true nature?

O my son, No. “Restore” means to bring back again evil for evil, worldly for worldly, devilish for devilish, and good for good, righteous for righteous, just for just, and merciful for merciful.

So, my son, have mercy on your brothers and sisters. Be fair, judge righteously, and always do good. If you do these things, you will get your reward. Yes, mercy will be restored to you again, and justice. Righteous judgment will be restored to you again, and good will be rewarded to you again.

Whatever you give out will come back and be restored to you again. So restoration truly punishes sinners, and does not excuse them at all.
