Alma — Chapter 29
O how I wish I were an angel, and could have the wish of my heart, so I could use the trumpet of God, and shout with a voice that would shake the earth, telling people everywhere to repent!
Yes, I would tell every soul, with a voice like thunder, about repentance and the plan of salvation, so they would repent and come to our God, so there would not be any more sadness anywhere on earth.
But I am a man, and wishing this is a sin, because I should be happy to do what the Lord has called me to do.
I should not let my wishes go against God’s great and fair law, because I know he will give people what they want, whether death or life. Yes, I know he will give people what they want, whether they want to be saved or destroyed.
Yes, I know people learn about good and evil. Those who cannot tell good from evil will not be punished. But those who know good from evil can choose what they want — good or evil, life or death, joy or guilt.
Now, since I know these things, why should I want to do more than the work I have been called to do?
Why should I want to be an angel and talk to people everywhere on earth?
The Lord gives all nations the chance to learn about his gospel, using their own people and talking in their own language to teach them. He gives them as much of the gospel as is good for them. So we see that the Lord wisely teaches what is just and true. know the Lord:
I know what the Lord has commanded me, and I glory in it. I do not glory in myself, but I glory in what the Lord has commanded me to do. Yes, this is my glory, that I might be a tool in God’s hands to help some soul repent. This is my joy.
When I see many of my brothers and sisters truly repent, and come to the Lord their God, my soul is filled with joy, and I remember what the Lord has done for me, and that he has heard my prayers. Yes, then I remember the mercy he had on me.
Yes, and I also remember my ancestors’ slavery. I know the Lord saved them from slavery, and built up his church this way. Yes, the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob saved them from slavery.
Yes, I have always remembered my ancestors’ slavery. The same God who saved them from the Egyptians saved them from slavery.
Yes, that same God built up his church among them, and gave me a holy calling to teach the gospel to this people. He has given me lots of success, which gives me great joy.
I am happy not only about my success, but also about my brothers’ success in the land of Nephi.
They worked very hard, and had great success, and their reward will be very great!
When I think of my brothers’ success, my soul is so full of joy that it almost seems it would leave my body.
May God bless my brothers to sit down in his kingdom. Yes, and may God bless those whom they have taught, so they will not [leave the truth], but praise God forever. May God bless them just as I have said. Amen.
