The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Alma — Chapter 28

After Ammon’s people began to live in the land of Jershon, and after the church was built up there, the Nephite armies were put all around them in the lands of Jershon and Zarahemla to protect them. The Lamanite armies had followed the Ammonites into the wilderness,

So there was a terrible war, worse than any there had ever been in the land since Lehi left Jerusalem. Tens of thousands of Lamanites were killed.

Many Nephites were also killed, but the Lamanites were defeated and scattered, and the Nephites went back to their own land.

The Nephites in all the land during this time were very sad.

Wives were crying about their husbands, and fathers were crying about their sons, and daughters were crying about brothers. All the people were crying about those in their families who had been killed.

This was a very sad day — yes, a time of sadness and a time for lots of fasting and praying.

This was how the fifteenth year of the judges ended.

This is the history of Ammon and his brothers — their travels in the land of Nephi, their sufferings and their sadness and their troubles. This is the history of their amazing joy, and of how their brothers and sisters were welcomed to safety in the land of Jershon. May the Lord, the Savior of all people, bless their souls forever.

This is also the history of the wars and fights between the Nephites themselves, and the history of the wars between the Nephites and Lamanites; and so the fifteenth year of the judges ended.

From the first year to the fifteenth year there was lots of blood and destruction. Many thousands of people were killed.

Many thousands of bodies are buried in the ground, and many thousands of bodies are rotting on top of the ground. Many thousands of people are crying about the dead in their families, because they are afraid (with good reason) that those who were killed will not be saved.

Many thousands of other people are crying about the dead in their families, but they are happy because they have good reason to hope that those who were killed will be saved and live in happiness with God forever.

So we see that people will go to different places in the next life because of sin and wickedness and the devil’s power, and because of his tricky plans to trap people’s hearts.

We can also see how people need to work to help the Lord save people. We see the reason for sadness because of people’s death and destruction; and we see the reason for happiness because of Christ’s light, which brings people to eternal life.
