The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Third Nephi — Chapter 27

While the disciples of Jesus were traveling and preaching to the people the things they had heard and seen, and baptizing in Jesus’ name, they gathered together often to pray and fast.

Jesus showed himself to them again because they were praying to the Father in his name. Jesus came and stood among them, and said to them: “What do you want me to give you?”

And they said to him: “Lord, we want you to tell us the name we should call this church, because the people are arguing about it.

And the Lord said to them: “Why are the people arguing about this?

“Haven’t they read the scriptures which say you must take on you Christ’s name, which is my name? This is the name by which you will be called at the last day.

“Whoever takes on my name and endures to the end will be saved at the last day.

“Everything you do should be done in my name, so name the church after me, and ask the Father in my name to bless the church because of me.

“How could it be my church if it is not named after me? If a church is called the Church of Moses, then it is Moses’ church. If you name a church after someone, then it is that person’s church. But if it is called after my name, it is my church, so long as it is built on my gospel.

“I tell you that you are built on my gospel, so whatever things you must name, name them after me. If you pray to the Father for the church in my name, and if the church is named for me, the Father will hear you.

“And if the church is built on my gospel, then you will see the Father’s own works in it.

“But if it is not built on my gospel, but on what people do or what the devil does, then they may be happy for a little while, but when the end comes, they will be cut down and thrown into the fire, from which they cannot come back.

“The things they do will follow them, and they will be cut down because of what they do. So remember what I have told you.

“I have given you my gospel, and this is the gospel I have given you: That I came into the world to do what my Father sent me to do.

“My Father sent me to be lifted up on the cross, so all people would come to me. Just as I was lifted up on the cross, the Father will lift up all people to me to be judged by what they do, good or bad.

“This is why I was lifted up: the Father’s power will bring all people to me so they can be judged by the things they do.

“Whoever repents and is baptized in my name will be filled [with the Holy Ghost]. If they endure to the end, I will tell the Father that they are not guilty on the day I stand to judge the world.

“Whoever does not endure to the end will be cut down and thrown into the fire from which they cannot come back, because of the Father’s justice.

“This is what he has said to people. He does not lie. He will do everything he has said he will do.

“No unclean thing can come into his kingdom. The only ones who will come into his rest will be those who have washed their clothes in my blood because of their faith in me to the end, having repented of all their sins.

“This is the commandment: Repent, everyone on earth. Come to me and be baptized in my name so the Holy Ghost can make you pure, so you will stand and be clean before me at the last day.

“I tell you that this is my gospel, and you know the things you must do in my church. You must do the things you have seen me do.

“If you do these things, you will be blessed, and you will be lifted up at the last day.

“Write the things you have seen and heard, except for the things you have been told not to write.

“Write about everything the people do, just as it has been done before,

“Because the people will be judged out of the books which have been written, and all people will know about the things they do.

“The Father writes about everything, and that is why the world will be judged from the books which are written.

“You need to know that you will be the ones to judge this people, and you must judge them the same way I judge them — fairly. So what kind of people should you be? I tell you, you must be just like me.

“Now I will go to the Father. I tell you, whatever you ask the Father for in my name will be given to you.

“So ask, and you will receive. Knock, and the door will be opened. Whoever asks receives, and the door opens for whoever knocks.

My joy is great — my joy is full because of you and this generation. Even the Father is full of joy, and the holy angels, too, because none of this generation is lost.

“I want you to understand that I mean that none of the people alive in this generation will be lost, and my joy is full because of them.

“But I am sad because the devil will lead away the fourth generation after this one. They will sell me for silver and gold, and for things which moths eat up and which robbers steal. At that time, I will visit them and bring the wicked things they do right back to them.”

After Jesus said this, he said to his disciples: “Come in at the narrow gate. The gate is narrow, and the path is narrow which leads to life, and only a few will find it. But the gate is wide, and the path is very wide which leads to death, and many people will follow that way until the night comes, when no one can do anything to help themselves anymore.”
