Third Nephi — Chapter 19
After Jesus went up into heaven, the people went away, and every man, woman and child went back to their own homes.
But even before it was dark, people all over were told that many had seen Jesus, and that he had taught them, and that he would show himself again to the people the next day.
All night long people were told about Jesus, and whoever heard about it worked hard all night to be where Jesus would show himself to the people the next day.
The next day, when the people were gathered together, the twelve disciples whom Jesus chose — Nephi, his brother Timothy (whom Nephi had raised from the dead), Timothy’s son Jonas, Mathoni and his brother Mathonihah, Kumen, Kumenonhi, Jeremiah, Shemnon, Jonas, Zedekiah, and Isaiah — stood in the middle of the people.
There were so many people that the disciples divided them into twelve groups.
Then the twelve taught the people. They made the people kneel on the ground and pray to the Father in Jesus’ name.
The disciples prayed to the Father in Jesus’ name, too. Then they stood up and taught the people.
When they had taught everything Jesus had said, without changing anything at all, they knelt again and prayed to the Father in Jesus’ name.
They prayed for what they wanted most. They wanted the Holy Ghost to be given to them.
After they prayed for this, they went down next to the water, and the people followed them.
Then Nephi went into the water and was baptized.
He came up out of the water and began to baptize all whom Jesus had chosen.
When they were all baptized and had come up out of the water, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they were filled with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
There was a circle like fire around them which had come down from heaven, and all the people there saw it and were witnesses of it. Angels came down from heaven and taught and blessed them.
While the angels were blessing the disciples, Jesus came and stood in the middle of them and blessed them.
Then he commanded all the people, and his disciples, too, to kneel down on the ground again.
After they all knelt down on the ground, he commanded his disciples to pray.
They began to pray, and they prayed to Jesus, calling him their Lord and their God.
Then Jesus went a little ways away from them, and bowed down on the ground, and said:
“Father, I thank you for giving the Holy Ghost to those whom I have chosen. I chose them from out of the world because of their belief in me.
“Father, I pray you will give the Holy Ghost to everyone who will believe what they say.
“Father, you gave them the Holy Ghost because they believe in me. You see that they believe in me because you hear them, and they pray to me. They are praying to me because I am with them.
“Now, Father, I pray to you for them, and for all those who will believe what they say, so they will believe in me. I pray that I will be in them just as you, Father, are in me, so we can all be one.”
After Jesus prayed to the Father, he came to his disciples, who were still praying. They did not say many words, because they were given to know what they should pray for, and they were filled with desire.
Then Jesus blessed them as they prayed to him, and he smiled on them. The light of his face shined on them, and they became as white and shining as Jesus’ face and clothes. It was the brightest white there ever was — whiter than anything on earth.
Jesus said to them: “Keep praying,” so they did not stop praying.
Then he went a little ways away from them again and bowed down on the ground, and prayed again to the Father, saying:
“Father, I thank you for making those whom I have chosen pure because of their faith. I pray for them, and for those who will believe what they say, so they will be made pure in me as my disciples have been, by having faith in what they say.
“Father, I do not pray for the world, but for those whom you have given me from out of the world, because of their faith, so they will be made pure in me. I pray that I will be in them as you, Father, are in me, so we all will be one, and that I will have glory in them.”
After Jesus said this, he came back to his disciples. They were still praying to him without stopping. He smiled on them again, and they shined as brightly as Jesus.
Then Jesus went a little ways away again, and prayed to the Father.
No tongue can speak the things he prayed, and no one can write them down.
The people heard and told of it. Their hearts were open so they could understand in their hearts the things he prayed.
But the words he prayed were so great and wonderful that people cannot write them nor say them.
After Jesus was done praying, he came to his disciples again and said to them: “I never saw such great faith among all the Jews. I could not show them miracles as great as these, because they did not believe.
“I tell you that none of them saw things as great as you have seen, and none of them heard things as great as you have heard.”
