Third Nephi — Chapter 13
Jesus continues teaching the Nephites–see Matthew 6.
I want you to give to the poor. But don’t give to the poor just so other people can see you, or Heavenly Father will not bless you.
When you give to the poor, don’t be like the hypocrites who have a trumpet play in the churches and streets so people will praise them. I tell you, they already have their reward.
But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
Let your giving be done in secret. Your Heavenly Father, who sees in secret, will bless you openly.
When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites. They love to pray standing up in church and on the street corners so people will see them. I tell you, they already have their reward.
But when you pray, go into a place by yourself. When you have closed the door, pray to your Heavenly Father in secret. Your Heavenly Father, who sees in secret, will bless you openly.
When you pray, don’t say the same things over and over like those who worship false gods. They think their gods will hear them if they say the same thing again and again.e who have mercy on others, because God will have mercy on them.
Don’t be like them, because your Heavenly Father knows what you need even before you ask him.
Pray like this. “Our Father in heaven, may your name be holy.
“Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
“Forgive us for our sins as we forgive others.
“Keep us from sinning, and save us from evil.
“The kingdom, and the power, and the glory are yours forever. Amen.”
If you forgive people for the bad things they do to you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you do not forgive other people for the bad things they do to you, your Heavenly Father will not forgive you for the bad things you have done.
Don’t fast like the hypocrites do. They make their faces look sad so people will know they are fasting. I tell you, they already have their reward.
But when you fast, fix your hair and wash your face,
So people will not know you are fasting. Your Heavenly Father will know, and your Heavenly Father, who sees in secret, will bless you openly.
Don’t work to get earthly riches which moths eat up, and rust destroys, and which robbers steal,
But work to get riches in heaven which moths cannot eat up, and rust cannot destroy, and which robbers cannot steal,
Because where your riches are, that is where your heart will be.
The eye is the light of the body. If your eye looks only for the glory of God, then your whole body will be filled with light.
But if your eye is evil, then your whole body will be full of darkness. If you are full of darkness, how great that darkness is!
People cannot serve two masters. They will hate the one and love the other, or else follow the one and not obey the other. You cannot serve God and money.
After Jesus said these words, he looked at the twelve he had chosen and said to them: Remember what I have said, because you are the ones I have chosen to teach this people. So I tell you, do not worry about what you will eat, or drink, or what you will wear. Isn’t your life more important than what you eat, and isn’t your body more important than what you wear?
Look at the birds. They do not plant, or harvest, or gather food into barns, but your Heavenly Father still feeds them. Aren’t you more important than they are?
How many of you can make yourselves taller just by thinking about it?
Why worry about your clothes? Think of how the flowers grow. They do not work or sew,
But I tell you, even [King] Solomon in his best clothes was not better dressed than one of these flowers.
So if God dresses the grass in the field, which lasts only for today and then is burned in the oven tomorrow, he will dress you, if you have faith.
So don’t think: “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?”
Your Heavenly Father knows you need all these things.
But think first about building God’s kingdom and being righteous, and all these things will be taken care of.
Do not worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will take care of itself. There is enough trouble to worry about for each day.
