Third Nephi — Chapter 12
Jesus teaches the Nephites–see Matthew 5.
After Jesus said these things to Nephi and the others whom he had chosen (and there were twelve of them in all), he said to all the people: You will be blessed if you do the things these twelve men tell you to do. I have chosen them to be your servants, and I have given them power to baptize you with water. After you are baptized with water, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost. You will be blessed if you believe in me and are baptized, now that you know that I am.
Those who believe you when you tell them about me will be even more blessed. Yes, those who believe you and are baptized will be very blessed, because they will be baptized with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and their sins will be taken away.
Blessed are the humble who come to me, because they will live in the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the sad, because they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, because they will be given the earth.
Blessed are all who want to be righteous, because they will be filled with the Holy Ghost.
Blessed are those who have mercy on others, because God will have mercy on them.
Blessed are all those with pure hearts, because they will see God.
Blessed are all who work for peace, because they will be called the children of God.
Blessed are all who are persecuted for following me, because they will live in the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people make fun of you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of lies about you for following me.
You will be happy and have joy in heaven. The prophets who lived before you were persecuted, too.
You are the salt of the earth. Just like salt makes everything taste better, you will bless the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, what good is it? It is good for nothing, and people walk on it.
You should be a light to this people. Cities that are built on hills cannot be hidden.
Do people light a candle and then hide it under a basket? No, they put the candle on a candlestick, and it lights up the whole house.
Let your light shine before this people so people will see your good works and give glory to your Heavenly Father.
Do not think that I have come to destroy the Law of Moses. I have come here to make everything the prophets have said come true.
I have done even the smallest things the prophets said I would do.
Now I have told you what my Father has told me to tell you. Believe in me, repent of your sins, and come to me with a broken heart and repentant spirit. You now have the commandments, and the law is finished.
So come to me and be saved. If you do not keep the commandments I have given to you now, you will not come into the kingdom of heaven at all.
You have heard what those who lived long ago said and wrote — that you must not kill, and that God will punish anyone who kills.
But I tell you that whoever is angry with another person will also be punished. And whoever calls another a person “worthless” will be judged, but whoever says to another, “You fool!” may go to hell.
So if you come to me, or want to come to me, and you remember that someone has something against you,
Go to that person and make things right again. Then come to me with all your heart, and I will let you in.
Make things right with your enemy quickly, in case they trap you and you are thrown into prison.
I tell you that you will not get out of prison until you have paid the very last penny. And when you are in prison, can you pay even one penny? I tell you, No.
Those in olden times wrote: “Do not commit adultery.” are one.
But I tell you that whoever look at others with lust have committed adultery in their hearts.
I command you not to let any of these things come into your heart,
Because it is better for you to give up having something than to be thrown into hell.
It was written that if a man wants to divorce his wife, he must give her a divorce paper.
But I tell you that if any man divorces his wife, unless she has committed sexual sin, he is making her commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
It is written, too, that you should not make promises on your honor, but that you should swear by the Lord not to break your promise.
But I tell you, do not swear at all — not by heaven, because that is where God lives;
Nor by the earth, because that is where he rests his feet.
Do not swear by the head, because you cannot make one hair black nor white.
Say only “Yes,” and “No,” because it is evil to say more than that.
It is written: “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.”
But I tell you, do not fight evil with evil. Let whoever hits you on the right cheek hit you on the left cheek, too.
If anyone takes you to court and you have to give him your coat, let him have your overcoat, too.
If anyone makes you carry his things for a mile, go with him for two miles.
Give to anyone who asks you, and do not say no to anyone who wants to borrow something from you.
It is also written: “Love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.”
But I tell you to love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who do bad things to you and are mean to you,
So that you will be your Heavenly Father’s children. He makes the sun to shine on both bad and good people.
The things said in olden times that were part of the law are all finished because of me.
Old things are finished. Now everything is new.
So I want you to be as perfect as I am, or as perfect as your Heavenly Father.
