Third Nephi — Chapter 11
Chapters 11–26: Jesus Christ visits the Nephites
[At the end of the thirty-fourth year], many people were gathered around the temple in the land of Bountiful. They stood talking to each other and showing each other many great and terrible changes.
They also talked about Jesus Christ, for whose death the sign had been given.
While they were talking about these things to each other, they heard a voice that seemed to come from heaven. They looked around, because they did not understand what the voice had said. It was not a mean voice, nor a loud voice. But even though it was a quiet voice, it went straight to their souls, and made them shake, and made their hearts burn.
They heard the voice again, but they still could not understand it.
But the third time, they listened for the voice very carefully, and they looked up at the sky where the voice was coming from.
The third time, they understood the voice, and it said to them:
“This is my Dear Son, who has pleased me very much and brought glory to my name. Listen to him.”
When they heard what the voice said, they looked up and saw a Man coming down dressed in a white robe. He came down and stood among them, and all the people looked at him. They did not say anything to each other, because they were afraid and did not know what was happening. They thought an angel was visiting them.
The Man held out his arms and said to the people:
“I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets said would come into the world.
“I am the light and life of the world. I have done the very hard thing the Father told me to do. I have brought glory to the Father by taking on me the sins of the world, and by doing everything he has told me to do since the world began.”
When Jesus said this, all the people fell to the earth, because they remembered that the prophets had said Christ would visit them after he had gone up into heaven.
Then the Lord Jesus said to them:
“Stand up and come to me, so you can touch where the spear went into my side, and where the nails went through my hands and feet. Then you will know that I am the God of Israel, and the God of the whole world, and that I was killed for the sins of the world.”
All the people went to him and touched his side and his hands and his feet. They did this one by one until everyone had done it, and had seen with their own eyes and felt with their own hands, so they knew for themselves that this was the One who would come whom the prophets had written about.
When they had all done this and knew for themselves, they all shouted together:
“Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God!” And they fell down at Jesus’ feet and worshiped him.
Then Jesus spoke to Nephi, who was among the people, and told him to come to him.
Nephi stood up and went to him, and bowed down before the Lord and kissed his feet.
The Lord told him to stand up. So Nephi stood up in front of Jesus.
The Lord said to him: “I give you power to baptize these people when I go back up to heaven.
Then the Lord called others and said the same thing to them, and gave them the power to baptize. He said to them: “This is the way you should baptize people, and there will be no arguments about it.
“I tell you that this is how you should baptize whoever listens to what you say and wants to repent and be baptized. Go down and stand in the water, and baptize them in my name.
“These are the words you will say, after you call them by name:
“‘Having power given to me by Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.’
“Then put them completely under the water, and then bring them up out of the water again. have taught and helped me.
“This is the way you should baptize people in my name, because the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one. I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, and the Father and I are one.
“Baptize people in the way I have told you. Don’t argue with each other as you have done before. Don’t argue about what I teach you as you have done before.
“I tell you that whoever argues is not my servant, but is the devil’s servant. The devil makes people argue and get angry with each other.
“I do not teach people to get angry and argue with each other, but I teach you not to do those things.
“I will teach you what is right.
“This is what I will teach you, and it is what the Father has told me to teach you. I will be a witness of the Father, and he will be a witness of me, and the Holy Ghost will be a witness of both the Father and me. The Father commands all people, wherever they are, to repent and believe in me.
“Whoever believes in me, and is baptized, will be saved, and they will live in God’s kingdom.
“Whoever does not believe in me, and does not get baptized, will be damned.
“This is what I teach you, and this is what the Father wants me to teach. Whoever believes in me believes in the Father, too. The Father will be a witness of me to all who believe in me, and will visit them with fire and the Holy Ghost.
“The Father will be a witness of me, and the Holy Ghost will be a witness of the Father and me, because the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost are one.
“I tell you again, you must repent and become like a little child, and be baptized in my name, or else these good things will not happen to you.
“I tell you again, you must repent and become like a little child, and be baptized in my name, or else you cannot live in God’s kingdom.
“This is what I teach. Whoever does the things I teach them to do will be saved, and the devil will have no power over them.
Whoever teaches something more or less than what I teach, and tells people that it is what I teach, is wicked. They will be in the devil’s power at the end of the world.
“So go to the people all over the land and teach them what I have told you.”
