Third Nephi — Chapter 10
All the people heard what was said. After they heard these things, the land was very quiet for many hours.
The people were so amazed that they stopped crying and howling about their dead families and friends.
Then the voice came again and said to the people (and they all heard it):
“O you people of these great cities that have been destroyed, you who are Jacob’s descendants–yes, you who are part of the House of Israel, I wanted many times to gather you to me and feed you like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.
“Again, I wanted many times to gather you to me just like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings–yes, you, O people of the House of Israel who have been destroyed; and yes, you, O people of the House of Israel living in Jerusalem. Yes, I wanted many times to gather you to me like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not come!
“O you of the House of Israel whom I have saved, I want to gather you to me like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, if you repent and come back to me with all your hearts.
“But if not, O House of Israel, your lands will be empty until the time comes to keep the promises I made to your ancestors.”
After the people heard these words, they began to cry and howl again about their dead families and friends.
This was how the three days passed. Then during the morning [of the fourth day], the darkness left the land, and the earth stopped shaking, and the rocks stopped breaking, and all the awful noises stopped.
The earth came together again. The people who were alive stopped crying and howling, because their sadness turned into happiness, and they thanked their Savior, Jesus Christ.
So far, what the prophets had said would happen had come true.
The people who were more righteous — who had believed the prophets and not stoned them, and who had not killed the saints — were the ones who had been saved from destruction.
They were not buried up in the earth, nor drowned in the sea, nor burned by fire, nor carried away by tornadoes, nor killed by the smoke and darkness.
Whoever reads this, please understand. And whoever has the scriptures, study and see whether or not all these deaths and this destruction by fire and smoke, and tornadoes, and earth are what the prophets said would come true.
I tell you — yes, many said these things would happen when Christ came, and they were killed because they talked about these things.
The prophets Zenos and Zenock talked about these things, and they talked about us because we are part of their family.
Our father Jacob talked about part of Joseph’s descendants. And aren’t we some of Joseph’s descendants? Aren’t these things written on the brass plates our father Lehi brought with him from Jerusalem?
I will show you that at the end of the thirty-fourth year, those Nephites who had been saved had many wonderful blessings given to them. And Christ came and visited them.
He showed his body to them and taught them. I will now write about Christ’s visit to them, and stop writing my own words.
