Second Nephi — Chapter 7
Jacob continues talking to his people (see Isaiah 50).
Yes, this is what the Lord says: “Have I given you away, or thrown you out forever?” The Lord says: “Where are your mother’s divorce papers? To whom have I given you, or to which banker have I sold you? You have sold yourselves by sinning, and you gave your mother away because of your wickedness.
“Why wasn’t anyone there when I came? Why didn’t anyone answer me when I called? O House of Israel, don’t I have the power to save you? I can dry up the sea with one word. I can turn rivers into a desert and make their fish die and stink because there is no water for them.
“I make the heavens black and cover them with sackcloth.”
The Lord God made me talk like an educated man so I could talk to you, O House of Israel, to wake you up, even though you are tired. He made me able to listen like an educated man.
The Lord God opened my ears. I did not rebel, and I did not turn back.
I gave my back to the ones who beat me, and I gave my cheeks to those who tore out my beard. I did not hide my face when they spit on me.
The Lord God will help me, so I will not fail. I have made my face like a rock. I know I will not be ashamed.
The Lord is here, and he will protect me. Who wants to fight with me? Let me face them. Who will say bad things about me? Let them say those things to my face, and I will answer them with truth.
The Lord God will help me. All those who say evil about me will be like an old piece of clothing that moths eat up.
Is there anyone among you who fears the Lord and obeys his servant’s voice, who trusts in him even though he walks in darkness and has no light?
All you who light your own fires, go ahead and walk in the light you make from your own fire. This is what I will do to you: You will die in pain.
