The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

Second Nephi — Chapter 6

This is what Jacob, Nephi’s brother, said to Nephi’s people.

Dear brothers and sisters, you know that I, Jacob, have been called of God to his holy priesthood by my brother Nephi, whom you think of as a king or protector (and on whom you depend for safety); and you know that I have said many things to you.

But I am going to talk to you again, because I am worried about your souls. Yes, I worry a lot about you, and you know I always have. I have worked hard to teach you my father’s words, and I have told you about all the things which are written from the beginning of the world.

I want to talk to you about the things that are happening now, and which will happen, so I will read the words of Isaiah that my brother wants me to read to you. I am talking to you for your own good, so you will learn and give glory to your God’s name.

I will read you the words Isaiah said about all the House of Israel. You should think that they are written for you, because you belong to the House of Israel. Many things which Isaiah said are written for you, because you belong to the House of Israel.

Now, here are the words: “This is what the Lord God says: ‘I will raise my hand to the Gentiles, and set up a signal for the people; they will bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.

“‘Kings will be like fathers to you, and queens will be like mothers to you. They will bow down to you and lick the dust off your feet, and you will know that I am the Lord, and that those who wait for me will not be ashamed.’”

Now I, Jacob, will say something about these words. The Lord has shown me that those at Jerusalem, where we came from, have been killed or taken away as slaves.

Even so, the Lord has shown me that they will come back again. He has also shown me that the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, will show himself to them in the flesh. After he shows himself, they will whip him and kill him on a cross, as the angel told me.

After they harden their hearts and are stubborn against the Holy One of Israel, his judgments will come on them. The day will come when they will be hurt and have troubles.

The angel said that many would be troubled and hurt, but would still live, because of the prayers of those with faith. They will be scattered and beaten and hated. Even so, the Lord will have mercy them, so that when the time is right, they will learn about their Savior, and they will be gathered together again in their ancestors’ lands.

The Gentiles about whom the prophet wrote are blessed. If they repent and do not fight against Zion, and do not join the wicked church, they will be saved, because the Lord God will keep his promises to his children. This is why the prophet has written these things.

Those who fight against Zion and against the Lord’s promised people will lick the dust off their feet. The Lord’s people will not be ashamed. The Lord’s people are those who wait for him, and they are still waiting for the Messiah’s coming.

The prophet says the Messiah himself will bring them back a second time, and he will show himself to them in power and glory when they believe in him. His power and glory will destroy their enemies. He will not destroy anyone who believes in him.

Those who do not believe in him will be destroyed by fires, and storms, and earthquakes, and wars, and sickness, and famine. Then they will know that the Lord is God, the Holy One of Israel.

“Can slaves escape and be free from a wicked ruler?

“But the Lord says: ‘Even the slaves of a wicked ruler will escape and be free, because the Mighty God will save his promised people.’ The Lord says: ‘I will fight against those who fight against you.

“‘I will give those who made you slaves their own bodies for food. They will be drunk with their own blood as if it were sweet wine, and all people will know that I the Lord am your Savior, the Mighty One of Jacob.’”
