Second Nephi — Chapter 18
(See Isaiah 8)
Then the Lord said to me: “Take a big roll of paper, and take a pen, and write about Maher-shalal-hash-baz [or, ‘Destroy and rebuild quickly’].”
So I took Uriah the priest and Zechariah (Jeberechiah’s son) with me to be witnesses.
I went in to the prophetess, and she had a son. Then the Lord told me: “Call him Maher-shalal-hash-baz,
“Because the king of Assyria will take away the riches of Damascus and Samaria before the child will be able to say ‘Father’ or ‘Mother.’”
Then the Lord said to me again:
“Since this people turn away from the gentle waters of Shiloah, but are happy with Rezin and Remaliah’s son,
“The Lord will bring on them the strong and angry waters of the river — the king of Assyria and all his armies. He will be like a flood.
“He will go through Judah and take over your land, O Immanuel.
“Gather together and make treaties, O you people, and you will be broken in pieces. Listen, you who live in far lands: gather courage and prepare your weapons — but you will be broken in pieces.
“Make plans together, but it will do you no good. Say what you want, but it will not come true, because God is with us.”
The Lord took me by the hand and told me not to do what the people are doing. He said:
“Don’t say ‘a treaty’ to all those people saying ‘a treaty.’ Don’t be afraid of them or what they are afraid of.
“Make only the Lord of Hosts holy, and be afraid only of him.
“He will be a place of protection for you, but he will be a trap and a destroying rock for both Houses of Israel.
“Many among them will trip and fall, and get broken, and be trapped, and taken away.”
The Lord has said: “Teach the law and keep it safe in the hearts of my disciples.”
I will serve the Lord and look for him while he is hiding his face from the House of Jacob.
As for me and the children God has given me, we will be signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of Hosts who lives in Mount Zion.
When they tell you: “Talk to the dead and to wizards,” tell them: “Shouldn’t people look to God for the truth instead of to the dead?”
Those who say such things have no light in them.
They will be very hungry as they go through this time of terrible troubles. And when they are hungry, they will cry and get angry and look up as they curse their king and their God.
They will look at the land, but all they will see is darkness and pain, and they will be chased into darkness.
