Second Nephi — Chapter 17

(See Isaiah 7)

Rezin (the king of Syria), and Pekah, the son of Remaliah (the king of Israel), went up to make war against Jerusalem during the days of Ahaz, the son of Jotham (the son of Uzziah, king of Judah), but they could not win.

When the king of the House of David heard that Syria was a partner with Egypt, his heart dropped, and his people were shaken as trees are moved by the wind.

Then the Lord said to Isaiah: “You and your son Shearjashub go meet Ahaz at the end of the ditch at the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway.

“Tell him to watch out, and be quiet, and not be afraid of Rezin and Remaliah’s son, even though

“Syria and Ephraim are working together, and say:

“‘Let us make war against Judah and make a new king for it — Tabeal’s son.’

“The Lord God says: ‘It will not happen.

“‘Just as Damascus is the chief city of Syria, and as Rezin is the chief of Damascus, in sixty-five years Ephraim will be destroyed as a nation.

“‘Ephraim’s chief is Samaria, and Samaria’s chief is Remaliah’s son. If you do not believe, you will not rule.’”

Then the Lord said again to Ahaz:

“Ask the Lord your God to show you a sign in the sea, or on earth, or in the sky.”

But Ahaz said: “I will not ask for one, and I will not test the Lord.”

Then [Isaiah] said: “Listen, O House of David: Isn’t it bad enough to make people tired, but must you make God tired, too?

“The Lord himself will give you a sign: A virgin will have a son, and he will be named Immanuel [“God with us”].

“By the time he eats butter and honey, he will know how to say no to evil and to choose good.

“But before the child knows how to say no to evil and to choose good, the land whose two rulers you hate will lie empty.

“The Lord will bring you and your family and your people a day like the day Ephraim broke away from Judah. This will be the day of the king of Assyria.

“At that time the Lord will call for the flies living in Egypt, and for the bees living in Assyria.

“They will come and rest in the empty valleys and in holes in the rocks, and on the weeds and in the bushes.

“That same day the Lord will use the servants of the king of Assyria to shave off all the hair from your head and face and feet.

“At that time a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep.

“He will eat butter because of all the milk they give, and those who are left in the land will eat butter and honey.

“At that time every good place that had vines and trees will have nothing but thorns and weeds.

“People will come there with bows and arrows, because all the land will have become a wild place.

“People will not go to any of the hills which were once farms, because of the thorns and weeds, but oxen and cows will feed there.”
