Second Nephi — Chapter 15
(See Isaiah 5)
Then I will sing a song to my dear one about his vineyard. My dear one has a vineyard in a very good place on a hill.
He put a fence around it, and got rid of all the stones, and planted the best grapes in it. He also built a tower in the middle of it, and made a wine-press, too. He thought good grapes would grow, but only bad grapes grew.
You who live in Jerusalem and Judah, I ask you,
What more could I have done for my vineyard? I did everything to help it grow good grapes, but all it grew was bad grapes.
Now let me tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will take away its fence, and let it be burned up. I will take away its wall, and it will get walked on.
I will destroy it. It will not be pruned nor dug up, but weeds will grow all over it. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.
The Lord’s vineyard is the House of Israel, and the Jews are his best cared-for vines. He looked for justice, but found injustice. He looked for righteousness, but found shouting instead.
Woe to those who put so many houses together, and fence all of the fields so everyone must live in the cities!
The Lord said to me: “Many houses and cities will be left empty.
“The vineyards will not grow many grapes, and the fields will not grow much grain.
“Woe to those who get up early just to get drunk all day long and into the night!
“They listen to music while they eat and drink, and do not think about the Lord at all, nor about what he does.
“My people have become slaves because they do not know me. Their best people die of hunger, and the people die of thirst.
“Hell has gotten hungry and has opened its mouth wide. All the proud and foolish people will drop into it.
“[All people,] the poor and the mighty and the rich, will be made low.”
But the Lord will show that he is holy, and he will have glory in his righteous judgment.
His sheep will eat all the grass in the field of the proud, and strangers will own the riches of this people.
Woe to those who pull sin along with ropes of vanity,
And who say: “Let the Lord do his work faster, so we can see and know his work!”
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who call darkness light, and light darkness; who call bitter sweet, and sweet bitter!
Woe to those who think they are so smart!
Woe to those who are good at drinking wine and mixing strong drinks!
Woe to those who let the wicked go free for money, and who punish the righteous for being righteous!
The wicked will be burned up like fire burns up dry grass, because they have hated God’s laws and his words.
This is why God is angry and will punish his people. The hills will shake, and bodies will lie in the middle of the streets. Even after all this, he will still be angry.
He will put up a signal in a faraway place to call people to him. People will go to it quickly, without tiring.
They will not sleep, nor get undressed, and their shoes will not wear out.
They will all be ready. They will ride in hard and fast chariots which will sound like lions.
They will roar like lions and carry people away without fear.
The Lord will come against them at that day with a noise like the sea. If they look at the land, all they will see is darkness and sadness, and the sky will be dark.
