The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

First Nephi — Chapter 22

After I, Nephi, read these things written on the brass plates, my brothers came to me and said: “What do these things mean? Do they mean something spiritual, or will they happen to living people?”

I, Nephi, said to them: “The voice of the Spirit told these things to the prophet. The Spirit tells the prophets everything which will happen to living people on earth.

“The things I read about are spiritual things, but they will also happen to living people. It looks like sooner or later the House of Israel will be scattered all over the earth, among all nations.

“There are many people that those in Jerusalem do not know about. Yes, most of the people of the tribes of Israel have been led away and scattered all over the islands of the sea, and none of us knows where they are. All we know is that they have been led away.

“These prophecies are about all who were led away, and about all whom the Holy One of Israel will scatter. They will be scattered among all nations, and all people will hate them, because they will harden their hearts against the Holy One of Israel.

“But ‘after the Gentiles feed them, and after the Lord lifts up his hand to the Gentiles, and sets up his signal for them, and after their children have been carried in the Gentiles’ arms, and their daughters have been carried on the Gentiles’ shoulders’ — these things are earthly things. God’s promises to our ancestors about these things are earthly promises. These things are talking about us at a future time, and also about all our brothers and sisters who are part of the House of Israel.

“This means the time will come when, after all the House of Israel is scattered, the Lord God will raise a strong nation among the Gentiles on this land. Those Gentiles will scatter our descendants.

“After our descendants are scattered, the Lord will do a wonderful thing among the Gentiles which will be very important to our descendants. It will be like having our descendants fed by the Gentiles and carried in their arms and on their shoulders.

“It will also help the Gentiles — and not just the Gentiles, but all the House of Israel, making God’s promise to Abraham come true, when he said: ‘All the families of the earth will be blessed because of your children.’

“I want you to know, my brothers, that all the families of the earth cannot be blessed unless God shows his power to all nations.

“So the Lord will show his power to all nations by keeping his promises and by bringing his gospel to those who belong to the House of Israel.

“He will bring them out of slavery, and they will be gathered in their own lands. They will be led out of hiding and darkness, and they will know that the Lord is their Savior and the Mighty One of Israel.

“The blood of that great and wicked church, the sinner of all the earth, will be on their own heads, because they will make war among themselves. Their swords will fall on their own heads, and they will get drunk on their own blood.

“Nations that make war against you, O House of Israel, will fight against each other instead, and they will fall into the pit they made to trap the Lord’s people. Everyone who fights against Zion will be destroyed. And that sinner, who changed the right ways of the Lord — yes, that great and wicked church — will fall to the ground, and its fall will be very great.

“The prophet says that the time is coming soon when Satan will not have power over people’s hearts anymore. The day is coming soon when all the proud people and all the wicked people will be like dry grass, and the coming day will burn them up.

“The time is coming soon when all of God’s anger will be poured out on all people, because he will not let the wicked destroy the righteous.

“He will save the righteous by his power. Even if all his anger is poured out, the righteous will be saved, and the wicked will be destroyed by fire. The righteous do not need to be afraid, because the prophet says they will be saved by fire.

“My brothers, these things will happen soon. Yes, blood and fire and smoke must come on the earth, and these things will happen to living people if they harden their hearts against the Holy One of Israel.

“The righteous will not be destroyed, because the time will come when those who fight against Zion will be cut off.

“The Lord will make a way for his people, so he will keep the promise he made to Moses, saying: ‘The Lord your God will raise up a prophet like you, and you must listen to whatever he says. Whoever will not listen to that prophet will be cut off from among the people.’

“Now I, Nephi, tell you that this prophet Moses talked about was the Holy One of Israel, and he will judge righteously.

“The righteous do not need to be afraid, because they will not be overcome. But as for the kingdom of the devil, which is built up by people and is among them —

“The time will soon come when all churches which are built to get money, and to get power over people, and to get praise from the world, and those which are built to look for ways to sin, and to look to get the things of the world, and to do all kinds of wicked things–in short, all which belong to the devil’s kingdom–they are the ones who need to be afraid and shake. They will lie down in the dust. They will be burned up like dry grass. This is what the prophet said.

“The time is coming soon when the righteous will be led like cows to the barn, and the Holy One of Israel will rule with strength and power and glory.

“He will gather his children from all over the earth. He will count his sheep, and they will know him, and there will be one flock and one shepherd. He will feed his sheep, and they will look to him for food.

“Satan will not be free for many years. The people will be so righteous that he will have no power over their hearts, and the Holy One of Israel will rule over them.

“Now I, Nephi, tell you that all these things will happen here on earth.

“But all nations and families and people will live safely in the Holy One of Israel if they repent.

“Now I, Nephi, will stop talking, because I do not dare say any more about these things.

“So, my brothers, I want you to know that the things written on the brass plates are true, and they say that people must obey God’s commandments.

“Don’t think that my father and I are the only ones who have said and taught these things. If you obey the commandments and endure to the end, you will be saved at the last day. So it is. Amen.”
