First Nephi — Chapter 12
Then the angel said to me: “Look at your descendants and your brothers’ descendants.” I looked and saw the promised land, and there were as many people living there as there are grains of sand by the sea.
I saw many people come and fight against each other. There were many big and little wars, and many of my people were killed by the sword.
I saw lots of time go by, and many wars and fights. I saw so many cities that I could not count them all.
I saw a dark cloud come over the promised land. I saw lightning and heard thunder and earthquakes and loud noises. The earth and rocks split, and mountains fell down, and smooth valleys became rough. Many cities sank, and were burned, and fell down because of the earthquakes.
After I saw these things, the dark cloud went away, and I saw many people who had not been killed by all the terrible things which had happened.
Then I saw the heavens open, and the Son of God came down and showed himself to the people.
The Holy Ghost came and stayed with twelve other men whom God had chosen.
The angel said to me: “These are Jesus’ twelve disciples who have been chosen to teach your descendants.”
And he said to me: “Do you remember the twelve apostles of the Son of God? They will judge the twelve tribes of Israel, and they will judge these twelve disciples because they belong to the House of Israel.
“These twelve disciples you see will judge your descendants. They are righteous forever because of their faith in the Son of God.”
Then the angel said to me: “Look!” I looked and saw that three generations of my descendants were righteous after the Son of God visited them. They wore clothes that were as white as the Son of God’s. The angel said to me: “The blood of the Son of God has made their clothes white because of their faith in him.”
I, Nephi, saw that many of the fourth generation were righteous, too.
Then I saw many peoples of the earth gather together.
The angel said to me: “Look at your descendants and your brothers’ descendants.”
I looked and saw my descendants gather together to fight a war against my brothers’ descendants.
The angel said to me: “Look at the filthy river your father saw. It stands for hell.
“The dark cloud stands for the temptations of the devil, which make people blind to good things, and harden their hearts, and lead them into wickedness, so they get lost and are destroyed.
“The building your father saw stands for the pride of the world. Pride is like a wide valley, and the justice of God and the Messiah (the Savior) keeps people from crossing it. The Holy Ghost has told people about the Savior ever since the world began, and the Holy Ghost will tell people about him until the end of the world.”
While the angel said these things, I watched my brothers’ descendants fight and destroy my descendants because of their pride and wickedness.
My brothers’ descendants destroyed my descendants and lived all over the promised land.
Many of them fought each other again and again. There was war and talk of war for many generations.
The angel said to me: “These people will become weak because they do not believe in God.”
And I saw that when the people did not believe in God anymore, they became filthy and lazy and did many kinds of wicked things.
