First Nephi — Chapter 11
I wanted to know the things my father had seen, and I believed the Lord could help me know them. While I was sitting and thinking about these things, the Spirit of the Lord took me to a very high mountain I had never seen or been to before.
The Spirit said to me: “What do you want?”
I said: “I want to see the things my father saw.”
The Spirit said to me: “Do you believe your father saw the tree he told you about?”
I said: “Yes. You know I believe everything my father said.”
When I said this, the Spirit shouted: “Hosanna to the Lord, the Most High God, who is greater than all the earth. You are blessed, Nephi, because you believe in the Son of God, so you will get to see the things you wanted to see.
“This will be a sign to you: After you see the tree with the fruit your father ate, you will see a man coming out of heaven. After you see him, you will be a witness that he is the Son of God.”
Then the Spirit told me: “Look!” I looked and saw a tree like the one my father saw. It was more beautiful than anything I had ever seen, and it was whiter than snow.
When I saw the tree, I said to the Spirit: “I see you have shown me that most wonderful tree.”
He said to me: “What do you want?”
I said to him (the same way I talk to other people; the Spirit looked like a man, but I knew it was the Spirit of the Lord, and he talked to me the same way people talk to each other): “I want to know what it means.”
He said to me: “Look!” I looked where he had been, but he was gone.
Instead I saw Jerusalem, and other cities, and Nazareth. And in Nazareth I saw a beautiful virgin.
Then I saw the heavens open, and an angel came down and stood before me, and said: “Nephi, what do you see?”
I said to him: “The most beautiful virgin I have ever seen.”
He said to me: “Do you know about the great thing God is going to do for people?”
I said to him: “I know he loves his children, but I do not understand what everything means.”
He said to me: “This virgin you are seeing will be the mother of the Son of God.”
Then I saw the Spirit take her away. After a while the angel said to me: “Look!”
I looked and saw the virgin again, this time with a baby in her arms.
The angel said to me: “That baby is the Son of God the Father. Do you know what the tree stands for that your father saw?”
I said to him: “Yes. It is the love of God which lives in people’s hearts, and it is more wonderful than any other thing.”
And he said to me: “Yes, and it gives the most joy to the soul.”
After he said that, he said to me: “Look!” I looked and saw the Son of God living and working among people. Many fell down and worshiped him.
Then I knew that the iron rod my father saw stood for the word of God. The iron rod took people to the living waters, or to the tree, and both things stood for the love of God.
The angel said to me again: “See the great thing God is going to do for people.”
I looked and saw the Savior of the world whom my father had talked about, and also the prophet who would prepare people for him. That prophet baptized the Son of God. After the Son of God was baptized, the heavens opened and the Holy Ghost came down as a dove and was with him.
I saw him doing great things for the people and teaching them with great power and glory. Many came to hear him talk, but I saw others send him away.made fun of them.”
I saw twelve men follow him. Then the Spirit took them away and I could not see them anymore.
Then the angel said to me again: “Look!” I looked and saw the heavens open again, and angels came down to bless and teach people.
He said again to me: “Look!” I looked and saw the Son of God going among the people. I saw many people with all kinds of sickness, and many who were being hurt by devils and evil spirits. The angel showed this to me. The people were all healed by the power of the Son of God. He threw out all the devils and evil spirits.
The angel said to me again: “Look!” I looked and saw the Son of God taken and judged by the people.
I, Nephi, saw that he was nailed to a cross and killed for the sins of the world.
After he was killed, I saw many people gather to fight against the twelve apostles of the Son of God. (The angel called them “apostles.”)
Many of the people of the world gathered together in a very big building like the one my father saw. The angel said to me again: “Look at what the world plans to do. All the House of Israel has come to fight against the twelve apostles of the Son of God.”
I saw and tell you that the very big building, which stood for the pride of the world, fell down. Its fall was very great. And God’s angel said to me: “This is how everyone will be destroyed who fights against the apostles of the Son of God.”
