The Easy-to-Read Book of Mormon

First Nephi — Chapter 10

Since I, Nephi, am writing on these plates about the things I have done, and about what God has done for us, I need to say more about my father and my brothers.

After telling them about his dream, and after telling them to keep God’s commandments, my father told my brothers what was going to happen to the Jews.

He said that after Jerusalem was destroyed, and after the Jews were taken to Babylon as slaves, some of them would come back to Jerusalem at a later time.

And in six hundred years, God would send a prophet to the Jews who would be the Savior of the world.

He talked about the many prophets who had spoken of this Messiah — the Savior of the world.

He said that all people were lost and fallen, and always would be without this Savior.

He also talked about a prophet who would prepare the way for this Savior.

This prophet would shout in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord and make his paths straight! There is someone here among you with more power than I have, and you do not know who he is. I am not good enough to untie his shoe.” My father talked a lot about this.

My father said this prophet would baptize people with water in Bethabara, a ways from Jordan, and that he would baptize the Savior.

After he baptized the Savior, he would know he had baptized the One who would take away the sins of the world, and he would tell this to the people.

After my father said these things, he told my brothers about the gospel the Jews would hear, and how they would not believe it. After they killed the Savior, he would rise from the dead. The Gentiles would learn about this by the power of the Holy Ghost.

My father talked a lot about the Gentiles, and how the House of Israel was like an olive tree whose branches would be broken off and scattered all over the world.

He said that was why we were going to the promised land, so the House of Israel would be scattered all over the world as the Lord had said.

After the House of Israel was scattered, it would be gathered again; and after the Gentiles had been taught the true gospel, the Jews and the whole House of Israel would know about their Lord and Savior, too.

This was how my father talked to my brothers. He also said many other things I cannot write in this book, though I have written as many of them as I can in my other book.

All these things were done while my father lived in a tent in the valley of Lemuel.

When I, Nephi, heard everything my father said about his vision, and the things he said by the power of the Holy Ghost (which he had because of his faith in the Son of God, the Savior) — I, Nephi, wanted to see and hear and know these things by the power of the Holy Ghost, which God gives to everyone who looks very hard for him now, just as he did in olden times, and just as he will in times to come.

He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He has prepared a way from the beginning of the world for all people to repent and come to him.

Any person who looks hard for him will find him. The power of the Holy Ghost will show them God’s ways, just as in olden times, and just as in times to come, because the Lord does not change.

So remember, O people, that you will be judged by the things you do.

If you do wicked things in this life, you will not be clean when God judges you. Only clean things can live with God, so if you are not clean, you will be cut off from him forever.

The Holy Ghost has given me power to tell you these things, and not deny them.
